Livin' out here on "The Leelanau": Off the road and on the patio!

Sometimes we all just need to kick back....take a little respite from our travels and travails. Such was the case this past weekend when several of my old buddies made their annual trek "up north" to play golf. Then they continued on to my house to stay the night. This routine has been going on for years and years.

Needless to say, a few pops were consumed, and we regaled each other by telling and retelling the old tales. Heck, I've known…

Livin' out here on "The Leelanau": The Road Wearier 1978. Down the Old Plank Road!

Well, here's a little number from Uncle Dave Macon called "Down the Old Plank Road". We aren't going down any plank road, but we will take a look a little used dirt road out here on "The Leelanau". I'm a big fan of Uncle Dave, and this is one of my cheap tricks to include music where it doesn't really belong.

Livin' out here on "The Leelanau": The Road Wearier 1978. Highway to Hell!

Aw, I'm just using a sensational headline for a teaser. Today we're gonna take a bike ride out to the Leelanau State Park, located in Leelanau Township, right at the tip of Leelanau Peninsula, which of course is part of Leelanau County. And its certainly part of "The Leelanau". Thats a lot of Leelanaus, huh? Its about two and a half miles from my house. Lets hit the road, then.

The road on the right goes into my subdivision.…

Livin' out here on "The Leelanau": The Road Wearier 1978. Hey, wanna see my equipment?

No not THAT equipment....get your minds out of the gutter! I'm talkin' 'bout my cycling equipment!

Here we have it, ready to roll. Check out that big-ass water bottle! Its kind of hard to tell, but that bag under the seat used to be a rich shade of orange. The tops of the saddle bags are now pink, and were once a nice robust shade of red.

Look at that rust on the…

Livin' out here on "The Leelanau": The Road Wearier 1978, An Introduction.

Well, its been awhile since I've done a blog on "The Leelanau". Oh, there's been plenty to write about, but I just haven't been motivated.

Now, however, I think I'll share my upcoming (hopefully) adventures as "The Road Wearier, 1978". Nope, that's not a typo...I'm no kind of "Road Warrior". After I ride, I'm pretty weary. See, I dragged my old bicycle out of the crawl space, and took it down to a bicycle shop in the big city, and told 'em to fix 'er up. I want to start riding…

Ning Changes

Ning will be down Tuesday July 20th so they can switch to the new plan.

They say the network will be down from 9:00am till approximately

11:00am PDT. We all know how these thing go so it may run longer. They

scheduled it at that time so all hands would be on hand to help.

Over thelast couple of months there have been many questioned and concerns

discussed about the direction of Ning and more directly how they will

affect TBD. We stilldon't have all the answers,… Continue

ON THE ROAD AGAIN 28

Livingston, Texas

Hello again,

Happy and I are now at Georgetown, Texas. Just North of Austin. We left Galveston on the 26th of May and moved up to Livingston, Texas. That is where the Escapees RV Club Headquarters is located. It is also where my permanent home address says I live. I needed to get the RV a new inspection sticker and I needed to get the tailgate of the Jeep repaired. What do you mean? why? Let's just say…

ON THE ROAD AGAIN 27

I haven't posted travel blog for some time. I got involved with other things and I wasn't really on the road for some time after On The Road 26 1/2.

I think it is now time to catch up with what Happy and I have been doing the last few weeks.

We hung around Galveston for a few weeks after I got back from Colorado. After all, the fishing was good. The weather wasn't too hot. And the mosquitoes weren't too bad.

One of the highlights of the time there…

Everyone is a critic.

Lots and lots of back seat drivers are popping up these day. It's understandable really, but true to form it usually doesn't help and it's so annoying. When it is your loved one that needs medical assistance, the ambulance carrying the paramedics can't get there fast enough. When it is your friend who has fallen 60 feet off a ledge in the mountains, the rescue personnel appear to be moving in slow motion. Everything takes too long. When it's your coastline that is facing an ever encroaching oil… Continue

A hard lesson.

I lost a sister yesterday. While driving a familiar, but infrequent road, I saw a painted turtle in the roadway sunning himself on the roadbed. She was much too close to traffic and I was preparing to stop the car and carry her across the road, when I glanced in my rearview mirror. There were six cars and a truck behind me. Stopping on the one lane road would have required my blocking the road and inconveniencing everyone following me. I chose to keep driving and trust turtle wisdom and human… Continue

I am leaving this morning for south Louisiana, to spend a few days camping and paddling in the Marais

Stupidity, addiction and the polluted nest

I've been avoiding the gulf oil spill. This is no easy task.

Coverage is everywhere and growing more shrill and panicked by the day. Ed Shultz is shouting at the top of his lungs, Tamron Hall is running her coffee fueled mouth at 1500 words a minute, and poor little Bobby Jindal is talking with increased frustration about the lack of Coast Guard and federal response, looking like he might burst into tears at any moment. I feel his pain.

CNN, C-span, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News,… Continue

We are far better than this,

Have you ever wondered why many conservatives and Republicans are quick to label others "anti-American," "socialist," "communist," or "racist?"

Have you ever asked yourself why they wrap themselves in the flag and proclaim themselves to be "patriots," as if the rest of us don't qualify?

Have you thought it curious that while they are pounding their chests about how the United States is the greatest country in the world with the best system of government on the planet, they… Continue

ON THE ROAD AGAIN 26 1/2

My last blog dealt with my trip to Utah to find old friends and lost dreams of Urainium Mines.

The trip was very enjoyable and fullfilling. But, a major highlight of the trip came at the end.

My last day in Salt Lake City, Utah included meeting a dear friend from TBD.

Who? Why J. Lee S. The bard of SLC. I also met his landlady, Kim, her mother, and one of her sons.

J. Lee S. now holds the dubious honor of being the 51st TBD Member that I…
