ON turning 60



The first television in our house was a massive 19” box…that had two stations….both beamed from Yakima, 90 miles away. This meant that ANY kind of weather interfered with the reception.



I remember staying home from school…feigning sickness…so I could be there when it was delivered. The first thing I remember seeing on TV was a NBA basketball game…the Celtics were playing…I remember their floor.

Examine if you will, the odd case of Major Dufus Cryght. Major Cryght is an officer in the Army Reserve. Feeling some sudden rush of patriotic zeal, Major Cryght goes forth and VOLUNTEERS to SERVE with his fellow Ground Pounders in far off wars. Here I thought that the Party of No! The GOOP without leadership and without impetus to move things forward in this country was powerless and sitting on the sidelines doing nothing. After all, the US is in the midst of one of the biggest financial melt downs in its history. 70% of the American public demand Congress address national health care in some form or other. We are fighting wars on several fronts, Iraq and Afghanistan just to name a couple.

Let’s face it, through a series of minor and small events, this day was never, ever going to get a Gold Star on my calendar of ways to start a major holiday weekend.
