Examine if you will, the odd case of Major Dufus Cryght. Major Cryght is an officer in the Army Reserve. Feeling some sudden rush of patriotic zeal, Major Cryght goes forth and VOLUNTEERS to SERVE with his fellow Ground Pounders in far off wars. That’s correct….Major Cryght’s unit was not activated nor were they scheduled for deployment…so just this past May, overcome with honor and an incredible sense of civic – national pride, Maj. Cryght petitioned to serve his country by picking up arms and getting into the fray! Bravo for Maj. Cryght.

The military, never one to look a gift horse in the….er….mouth, says “Yep, you’re our boy!” And this past June, the Army cuts Major Cryght his orders. Off to exotic lands to fight the evil doers! Watta boy!! What a trooper!

But, his sense of national duty aside, Major Cryght goes into court, refusing those orders because, according to Major Cryght, they came from an ILLEGAL source. To quote Major Cryght, just so you know how strongly he feels, he said:

"[Then] any order coming out of the presidency or his chain of command is illegal. Should I deploy, I would essentially be following an illegal [order]. If I happened to be captured by the enemy in a foreign land, I would not be privy to the Geneva Convention protections.".

OK, well, the Army has seen cases like Cryght’s before – albeit driven by different political philosophies usually dealing with the legitimacy of the draft, and rescinds Major Dufus Cryght’s orders. Nope, he don’t have to go if he really feels that morally opposed to the conflict. They’d rather have a live major in the ranks here than a coward on the line.

This won’t do for Major Cryght. He INSISTS that his case be heard to clearly establish the legitimate authority of his Commander in Chief. The court tosses Major Cryght and his case to the curb, explaining that since he requested that the orders be rescinded, his case is now moot and unfit to waste public time and money.

So now back in Florida, Major Cryght should watch his butt. You see, part of what got many of the Abu Ghrib crowd faced a court martial was a little tag in the UCMJ called “conduct unbecoming.” Major Cryght took a moral stance. I just hope he’s willing to follow through when the ton of bricks that should fall on him comes cascading down!
