The Kentucky Derby and the Classic Mint Julep -- A Marriage Made in Heaven

By Art Namendorf

April 30, 2010, 9:44AM

Mint Julep.pngSaturday, May 1, 2010, marks the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby. It also marks the copious and conspicuous downing of the Derby’s favorite cocktail, the mint julep. It was served at Churchill Downs’ opening in 1875 and is now the official drink of the run for the roses.

This libationary fusion of bourbon and mint is both full of history and shrouded in tradition. Lauded by writers, it is even jokingly claimed to be the real cause of the Civil War

Thank you, Bull, don't mind if I do.

Like I could pass this up!
I live very close to deep water. Flotation devices cost a lot of money. When the Derby is over, might I borrow your Derby hat. I'll let you have it back before the 2011 Derby. I promise.
I'll bet Chuck could give us a good idea as to how Pru's hat would look after Robbie has it for a year. You're not going to use it in the Gulf are you Robbie?
Ha ha ha!
I know Pru would be happy with that hat. She keeps telling me that the only way to eat craw fish is the cajun way. Says they are really good. Myself, I prefer the tail.
:-D
So many choices!!!

And this one is made from a place mat - who can resist it's mystique, its je ne sais quoi, its ingenuity!

Oh, Juliette of the Spirits! Fellini movies are full of grand hats.

And that placemat is terrific.

Here's a couple for the horsey set.

It was Ok after I had parts of it explained to me.
Yes, it's one of my all time favorites. Along with Tampopo. Heh.

I know what you mean, Bull. But I'll bet you understood Suzy.

Here's one for your sweet tooth.

I actually understood it but it was nice to be able to discuss it with someone who understood it better than I.
