Finally succeeded in purchasing a ticket for the Spanish Riding School's morning training session followed by a tour of the stables and other buildings. There was a lot of emailing back and forth and problems with the credit cards, but after I finally called the credit card customer service and told them that I was trying to buy this ticket and they made a notation on my account to expect this charge, it went through. The one thing that I REALLY wanted to see and do in Vienna!
When are you going to Vienna, Carol--or have you already been?? I'm so behind the times!
Tell me your impressions. Pretty amazing, huh?!
Hi Angharad….I`m in Vienna now and my ticket is for this mornings performance and the afternoon is the tour of the stables. `````````yesterday on a walking tour of the centre of Vienna we were passing the SHS and some of the horses were coming into the stable area. They're just my size! Wahoo!
Looking forward to hearing all about your experiences when you get back.
I returned sunday night but have been a bit busy since then. The Winter Ring is as you see it in photos but the colors are more neutral..taupe and white mainly. there is a Summer Ring set up in a courtyard outside of the stable block with a retractable cover and an oval track around its perimeter that is a hot walker. The morning session is 2 hours divided into 4 30-minute segments and there are about 5-6 horses under saddle for each. I counted a total of 5 young horses ranging from deep grey to fleabitten gray for the last half hour but rotated during the previous 3 sessions. There were 2 female riders: an assistant rider and a trainee. The trainee was generally mounted on a school master and the assistant riders on the younger horses. Did you know that periodically in the foals there is one which never turns white? It's usually a dark bay and he's pure Lippizzaner and undergoes all the training that the other get but doesn't go on the road trips. In one session the trainee rider on the school master and the assistant rider on the young horse were practicing riding tail-to-nose and then shoulder-to-shoulder along the long side in shoulder-in position. All the young ones had mastered the working trot and as expected it flowed well. We did get to see assistant riders helping in the training of piaffe and passage as well as an oberreiter working a school master on the long reins. I was pleased to see that under the tails of their coats, all the riders carry a pouch of treats for their horse and each horse received his reward at the end of the session. Let me know what else you want to know. For now I will leave the tour of the stables for another day. Ciao
PS as far as I know Nathan is still out of action and before I left Terri and I were considering Max for the show season. I'll find out definitely this week.
Sorry to hear about Nathan. I hope you'll feel comfortable showing Max.
Max aka To The Max is a go for the show. Yesterday I brought down my pads and the smaller girth that I used for Coffee as Max is not as big around his barrel as Nathan. We settled on the black square pad using only a gel withers pad and the smaller girth. Next week we may be trying the bridle and checking the bit against USDF regs.
Hi Angharad Yesterday I picked up my ride times and the Intro classes are big! Since Max and I have only been a team since the end of March, I think we do well on lesson, but on today's lesson he was a bit gimpy on his right front leg. So while all the necessary arrangements have been made, right now it may be that we won't be going. Have to wait and see.
Just wonderful! Did you see the immaculate tack room? Wish I had been there!
I did know about foals never turning white. I was lucky enough as a kid to spend summers on a farm in Maine which had a small herd of registered Lipizzaner mares which were bred to Austrian stallions. I was too young to remember all the politics surrounding it, but I know it wasn't a situation that had happened in the US much up until that point. Anyway, I witnessed many foals born and growing to maturity in the 12 or so years I spent time there.
Looking forward to hearing about the tour of the stables. Did you make it to the Bundesgestüt Piber?
