I get a little confused about how things move and slow down in space . Since there is no air there . then what is . If a rocket fires it engine . How does it push against anything to gain speed ? Maybe it's pushing against Gravity ?

Newton's second law. For evert action there is a opposite and equal reaction. Doesn't need anything to push against. I thought everybody knew that.
