Tennessee Considers Training And Arming Schoolteachers To Protect Against Shootings

Tennessee has emerged this week as a center of the "the answer is more guns in schools" sentiment following the Newtown, Conn. elementary school shooting.

A member of the Republican-controlled legislature plans during its upcoming session to introduce a bill that would allow the state to pay for secretly armed teachers in classrooms so, the sponsor told TPM, potential shooters don't know who has a gun and who doesn't.

What can I say the inmates are in charge of the asylum. We few Democrats have almost no power. Meanwhile the state is litteraly falling apart. We have a governor who is allegedly a moderate republican but has no back bone at all. I do hope we survive as a state. Davy Crockett, Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Cordell Hull, Estes Kefaufer, Albert Gore, Sr and Junior, Haward Baker and many others would be ashamed.

with all the hoohoo about arming teachers, you notice they aren't asking TEACHERS about it? probably cause teachers will say gunfights aren't in their job description...and another real possiblility....just picture the litigation coming if this stuff goes thru...and who picks up the legal bills for a teacher if they get sued for blowing the bad guy out of his or her socks? and collateral damage? yeah you shot at the bad guy but you hit little gertrude crotchenfelder by mistake...who has to pay?

Nobody ever asks the teachers about anything regarding education. You would not continually try to "reform" medicine with asking doctors or the law without asking lawyers. Every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks they know more about education than teachers when in reality they don't know sh**.

Yes, just what this country needs. A bunch of six or seven year-olds with a loaded gun in their classroom. If they find it, and they will, they'll think it's a toy and shoot up half the class before they're stopped.

i STILL like the idea of friday night football with both sides armed....brings sports to a whole new level and allows more spectator involvement,  doncha think?  shades of the original  football game on the movie MASH... "My God They've shot him!"

Oh, and this stupid business of this happened because they took God out of the classroom. I went to a Catholic school and once saw a kid slap a nun across the face. In later years I  learned that some of my schoolmates were defiled by a priest. You couldn't have had more God in the classroom than we did, but He sure wasn't protecting children from doing or receiving evil.

A Utah sixth-grader caught with a gun at school told administrators he brought the weapon to defend himself in case of an attack similar to last week's mass shooting at a Connecticut school, officials said Tuesday.

The 11-year-old was being held in juvenile detention on suspicion of possessing a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault after other students at the suburban Salt Lake City elementary school told police he threatened them with the handgun.

Teachers and administrators at West Kearns Elementary School confronted the boy in class Monday after students reported the weapon, said Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley. The boy had an unloaded gun and ammunition in his backpack, Horsley said.

I thought Texas was going to secede.  Certainly the Doonesbury Strip was pushing it. Did something go wrong?

they didn't find enough half-wits....

Not everyone in Texas is nuts, just the ones in charge.

Just responded to a post from a friend of mine in Texas who wanted to know if I thought Gov Perry's idea of arming teachers was a good one.  I told her that I think it is insane but I think Gov Perry is insane.  I also told her that guns do not belong in classrooms.  I think I just lost yet another friend.  Oh well, I am too old to keep my mouth shut.

Perhaps someone should ask the teachers before they force them to "pack heat". Of course they never ask them about anything else regarding education.
