The weather was unseasonably warm. After a relatively cool spring, the rising temps and unstable air had ramifications. As I drove south, my nose was assaulted by the rapidly decaying carcasses hidden in the growing grasses of the ditch by the side of the road. The stench was incongruent with the verdant green grasses waving in the wind.
A mated pair of giant Canada geese, flying side by side, just managed to clear the tall sleeper cab of a tractor-trailer rig barreling north…
Hey Dave, It’s Dave! Can I call ya Dave? You don’t mind, do ya? Dave it is!
Ya, it’s me, Dave here. I know it’s been a while, but I’ve been a bit busy. Really I have. I’ve been busy. Howard Stern has nothing to do with it. So what if I can’t stand that guy. That’s no reason not to keep in touch is it?…
New York state's Michigan "Red Hots" are one of the most fascinating hot dog varieties that I've come across so far. The history of the Michigan Hot Dog is a jumble of legends, a culinary anthropologist's dream. Also known as "Texas Red Hots" but found…
I've been having killer headaches and trouble reading. Trouble staying on topic when I do read. Trouble seeing. It crossed my mind that I needed to have an eye exam, but I kept putting it off. I don't know why exactly. Maybe because I didn't want anymore changes in my life; there have been so many this year. I just didn't want one more thing to deal with. Head in the sand was my own Rx for me. Stick with these lousy reading glasses that only work a little. My Rx failed.
I've taken a few wrong turns here and there. But I've made some right turns too. It's hard to always do the right thing, say the right thing. I've always wanted to be one of those people who always seem to get it right. That would be so cool. But by now I know that's just not going to happen. It's not part of my core.
Like many who have, and many who are, I'm looking the age of 60 right in the eyes. I've lost people who were my guiding lights. Even when we fought we fought standing on…
There are many essential oils that have been noted to have a blood sugar lowering effect: dill, coriander, and fennel. These essential oils also have the additional effect of helping to unblock blocked receptor sites which cause cells to be resistant to the effects of insulin.
Although Rush Limbaugh's verbal assault on Sandra Fluke is both hideous and in keeping with the war on women being waged by his political party, even more disturbing is the silence by leading Republicans that seems to indicate tacit approval of his comments. Props to the president for supporting her.
JayLee recently started a discussion about travel over in the Forum. "Hit The Road".
It reminded me of some of my travels in the past. Probably wouldn't fit in the "Hit the Road Thread", so I'll put it here.
When I was in High School and College, there was a drive in, in my home town Named Smiley's Drive in. It was on a corner located at the town's major innersection.
Smiley was part of the local color. He had served time in "Moundsville" (The State Prison) for…
Amtrak's Southwest Chief comes gliding past the old ATSF depot, sounding only after the locomotives clear the building. I look away for a moment or two, thinking about traveling. When I look out the window again, the sun is glinting off the stainless steel of the coaches as the last of the train cross the trestles toward Illinois. I'm reminded of the silvery sides of a fish flashing as it leaves the water. only to disappear once again beneath the murky depths.
Some of you know that I DJ at a local radio station. Every year, I invite all TBD'ers to request a song (and dedication, if desired) to their own hunka hunka burnin' love that I can play on the air during the VD show, which will be Sunday, February the 12th. You and yer sweetie can listen in, live on the internet, or wait until I've archived the broadcast and posted it here. It's free, it's romantic and is generally better than anything on TV that night.
Are we squandering our opportunities to regain our economic strength, our intellectual capital, and our civic drive? While the US bickers, other countries aren't waiting for us to grow up and once again become adults. China and India, to name two, are on the move. Although it is true that China is not always proceeding in an environmentally prudent fashion, proceeding they are nonetheless. I know less about India, except that it has aspirations of long-term hi-tech…
I have real sympathy for the choice facing Iowa Republicans as the caucus nears. It's got to be a tough time to be a Republican. They're on the ropes as the public realizes they have done nothing but obstruct and take symbolic votes since taking office. They ended up on the wrong side of the tax issue with extending the payroll tax cut. They want to make the election about the poor economy and lack of jobs, while the economy is improving and the only thing they've done about jobs is pay…
