Yes the second amendment is the most misinterpreted part of the constitution. Perri you are right about it being out dated. They were talking flintlock muskets not semi automatic assault guns, two shots a minute instead of 50 to 100.
Also it was talking about towns keeping arms in an armory not individually. That is where the British had taken their weapons, not from individuals. In the second part it refers to "the right of the people to keep and bear arms". Using that wording "the people" is plural, meaning the people as a whole not individuals.
Not to say there is no right to have a gun but that individual right comes from the 9th amendment and would refer to guns for hunting and such, basically the same right they had then. -

The Bill of Rights was the cost to get approval of the Constitution as written. The 2nd Amendment is a part of those rights, inclusive, of such singular freedoms of speech and religion of which many in the world do not have.
We have the right to amend those freedoms and under the law many of those freedoms are defined and to many, and for many, are means to limit what those freedoms imply.
The 2nd amendment as we know it is not what was written over 200 years ago, it is the amendment as defined by cases brought before the Supreme Court where judgments and opinions have been rendered to tell us what we can or can not do as a country and citizens of this country.
Some of course would tell us that much of what we have experienced under the 2nd amendment is moot, moot in that as a fact, we are the best armed country in the world; armed as a military, police, other security forces and as well individuals. So, even if the amendment is repealed the reality is the same, we are an armed nation.
Then the question is, armed for what? What do we fear?

What do I fear? Gun nuts.
They carry illegally as well as legally, they confront and shoot both us and children in the neighborhood their road rage turns into shootings.
The problem is, even the nicest people who have access to a gun might use it.
My theory is, if I think someone is breaking into my house, shoot a hole through the roof; the shot -- he'll probably skedaddle right quick. If some one is confrontational, handle it like an adult -- be the bigger man and retreat. Road Rage -- grow up.
