Each year a number of popular magazines publish articles about "The Best Places To Live". Their criteria for judging is usually not the same as mine.

If you have been on tbd for very long, you probably know that I live and travel in an RV. See my "ON THE ROAD AGAIN" blogs.

I have recently started thinking about the fact that sometime in the future I will have to cut back on my travel or even pick a place to settle in for the long term.

So, what attributes would the perfect spot have? What would make a place so attractive that I would want to settle there? I have given this quite a bit of thought and have to admit that I have trouble answering this question. Here are some of the things that would be important to me.

1. Must have an intellectually stimulating social environment.

2. Must be affordable

3.  Must have "off leash" dog park or other place for dogs to get exercise and socialize with other dogs.

4. Has Unitarian church or fellowship.

5. Has Nice size river or lake nearby. Or is near Ocean.

7. Has moderate or tropic climate.

What is unacceptable:

1. Area dominated by conservative, evangelical churches that are active in politics.

2. Winters with average temps below 40 degrees.

3. High violent crime rate

What characteristics would your perfect place have?

My perfect place would be within an hour and a half of the ocean and two hours to the mountains. It would be within driving distance of major east coast cities. It would be culturally and intellectually alive. It would have a deep history. It would have a diverse group of people of all ages, races, religions and political backgrounds with open minds and open hearts. It would have an excellent park system. It would be home to professional sports teams. It would have first class restaurants and entertainment. It would have a small community feel. No hurricanes, no tornados, no earthquakes, and no extremes in temperature would be a bonus ;-)
You don't ask for much do you Q?
But PA, I have it ;-) I love where I live!
Quinn, sounds wonderful. when can Happy and I move in?
Well, There is that extremes in temperature thing.
What ever happened to the obnoxious neighbor?
♪♫ The obnoxious neighbor is gone ♪♫

Does Happy like little rag mop puppies? If so, when will you arrive? I have a spare bedroom, a nice yard, and I live two blocks from the dog park ;-)

I think it's only fair to warn you tho--It does get a tad chilly here in the winter, and we have been known to get some snow...
Okay, Quinn, I'm going to pack now. Please leave me your address & I'll Google Map it as I'm loading the car.

(it's not bad where I live, either, but I could use a change)
You'll have to share a room with Robbie??
I've given this some thought, too, Robbie, over the last 15 years or so, & my desires about the ideal place to live for me are quite similar to yours.

- temperate climate, particularly without long, harsh, cold winters
- intellectually stimulating social environment
- not predominantly/rigidly conservative in its social/political climate
- favorable standard of living
- dog friendly
- diverse in its people (my church embodies my ideal diversity: black (both American & African immigrants), white, Asian, Latino, young, middle aged, old, couples, families, singles, broad socio-economic continuum)
- preferably a metropolis or quite near a metropolis
- safe, as in I'm not concerned about going from my car to my home at night, I'm comfortable walking outside, etc.
Regardless of the convenieces and the weather, the perfect place to live is with or close to the one that makes your heart sing at dawn, makes your heart comfortable and content at dusk, makes you glad another day awaits and glad you survived the day just passed. Be close to the one whose smile clears away the clouds and the rain, shelters you from the cold winter winds and shades you in the sweltering sun. Be glad you're in the same room with that person no matter where that room may be, for only then can you both be truly happy.
And Her Cowboy... tell me that's in the works for you two!
