Have we seen the last of the Religious Right as a political mover and shaker in this country?

hey, i don't want them here! LOL
Those More correctly called the Religious Nutcases will always be back. People love fantasy and fairy tales and excuse to condemn others.
I believe they think that because it is repeated over and over in their churches and literature. Teleevangelism is just the same as the old tent meeting of the 1st and 2nd Great Awakiings just more comfortable because you don' t have to camp. These people read selections of history not all of history.
Back in the 70's and still during the Cold War a friend of mine who happened to be a minister told me and I quote "it is not the communist we need to worry about it is the crazy for the lord supposed christians"
The last? Probably not, as they make a small minority, but for whatever reason, have one of the biggest voices in America.

I don't mind God, It's his fan club I can't stand.
Huh, Well, I think a lot of the ten commandments already are law, you know the thou shalt not steal , thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not covet another God over the all American dollar! (Maybe that last one isn't officially law yet!)
As things get harder, the middleclass shrinks, people who have no formal education are unable to support themselves and get the "american dream" , jesus is a quick fix. As people in our culture become more and more alienated, cults and religion provides a place to feel they belong. That would be okay, if they were able to allow other to make their own choices, but part of their doctrine tells them that everybody need to be like them and believe as they do.

The odd thing is how can you have freedom of choice, if you don't really have a choice. So much of what these people "believe" is like that. I was a shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Baptist.

I am just not interested in a god that is suppose to be some father figure. Who pits one group of people against another because of some inferiority complex. In essence these people have not evolved/progressed/matured beyond tribalism.
it's like when we were kids, and my younger brother was the loudest - so no matter of right or wrong, things were usually appeased to him.
if we could only hit the mute button on them.
Seriously, I don't think some people can live without a really restrictive structure in their lives. The irony is that the superstructure always seems to be corrupt, while the minions are adhering strictly to the tenets of their structure. ( I think this applies to the business structures of the 50s, the military and religious structures.)
Jacquin, I believe that with all the economic problems in the country many people are turning to most anything and perhaps this appeals to many who have lost their jobs, homes, and health care. When people are desperate they are more apt to be swayed by religious arguments, regardless of how twisted those ideas may be. Afterall, how many wars have been fought in the name of religion? Therefore, I am afraid we may have only seen the beginning of this movement. Sadly.......
I disagree...at least on a national level. I think most of the leaders of the Evangelical Movement saw that they simply got taken to the cleaners...literally...by the GOOP who simply used and abused them and cast them aside like a used condom when finished. That does not mean they're out of politics altogether, however. I fully expect them to get very involved locally and overwhelm some communities.
Do no liberals believe in God anymore, or is it just the group here on TBD? For a group of people that are constantly 'preaching' tolerance, you guys sure seem to be having a challenge in actually living that philosophy in your daily lives. I will not be surprised if, at some point in our history, Christians will be persecuted and an attempt made to run them out of the country. Is that what we have to look forward to from the tolerant Left?
