As I always do on the first of the month, I borrowed another free book as part of the Amazon Prime lending library. This month's selection is "My Sister's Grave" by Robert Dugoni. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K2EOONI?btkr=1 My system for choosing among thousands of books is simple, I generally borrow one of the top book selected by others. I have been a Prime member for about two years and have enjoyed all my selections but one that I returned after reading a few pages. I figured if it didn't cost anything, nothing was lost but time reading a book I didn't enjoy and I only have so much time for reading. I will almost certainly read the Picoult book as soon as I see it on the shelves of the local library (either public or my Retirement Complex Book Exchange). I have read just about all of her books over the years. I recall two great elephant books I have read in the recent past: "Water for Elephants" and "A Son of the Circus." The later is a John Irving book when he was turning out some of his best literature.
I am not starting toward winter too well on the reading list. Just read a Dean Koontz book - the Darkest Evening - not a fan of his but with this one I am willing to read another of his. Now reading an old book Scotoline's - Mistaken Identity. I also am trying a book about the Russian army 1917 to present. Do not know much about Russia and want to learn a little - exercising the old gray matter is good. My garage runneth over with books friends have given me - so I will be reading a lot of their picks. Hope to have a book sale to raise money for our Parkinson's caregivers group. Hope I get a lot of the good ones read. I am still listing all the good suggestions from this group - have a lifetime reading list I need to get finished in next few years LOL. Thanks to all who contribute here.
I'm into New Orleans...
Many novels have been written about New Orleans over the years. It's also been the subject of plays and TV programs. I've enjoyed the old Southern charm and esoteric culture over the years and am now in the middle of an excellent novel about the city's history. "The White League" by Thomas Zigal is just such a story. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005Z23U0K?btkr=1 Keeping with the theme, I have "A Conspiracy of Dunces" and "The Moviegoer" also lined up. http://www.amazon.com/Confederacy-Dunces-John-Kennedy-Toole-ebook/d... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TLVNH0?btkr=1
Lesser les bon temps roller!
Hey rapa. So you need help with an Ipad. Well, I recently bought an Ipod and am having an awful time getting it to do what I want it to do. In fact, I'm on the edge of returning it and getting my money back. Perhaps it's just a matter of modern technology being too much for me.
I just finished reading something called Eyes Wide Open by Andrew Gross. He is an OK thriller writer who often becomes carried away trying to twist the story all around in the final few chapters by highlighting the action. This book was a good example of that. There are other authors who do this as well, and I often think they do so in order to sell the movie rights.
Now I am waiting for a library call on a book I reserved called Sparks by John Twelve Hawks. According to Wikipedia John Twelve Hawks, a pseudonym, is the author of the 2005 dystopian novel The Traveler and its sequels, The Dark River and The Golden City, collectively comprising the Fourth Realm Trilogy. The author's real name seems to be unknown. Makes it interesting; things like that don't happen often in the modern world. Anyway, I read all three of those books a few years ago and enjoyed them. So I will give his new one a try.
I have been depending a lot on the "for DUMMIES" books, myself. My computer is an IMac and "IMac for DUMMIES" has been in frequent use.
Just finished Wayfaring Stranger by James Lee Burke, a very good book and well written, but it left me a little depressed, but books do that sometimes. Four books came in that I had a on hold: Deadline, Personal (Jack Reacher),All the Light We Cannot See, and Windigo Island. Gotta read them all in 21 days. The weather is supposed to be very cold until Thanksgiving so sounds like a good time to read and munch on pre Thanksgiving stuff.
