Growing up I was very fortunate to have parents that welcomed anyone into our home with welcome arms. There was always a place at our table by my Ma and a helping hand from my Dad.

My first husband was not so friendly. If he did not like a person he let them know and they never came back to our home.

Back then it was thought that you do as the husband said because he was the boss or lord of the home and what he said ruled.

Ho ho ho he did not know me well and I learned quickly that even tho I was not allowed to drive or mingle with people except for my  children's teachers or the nuns at church I took my children on nice adventures using the city buses and trains.

After their religion instructions we got back on the bus but it headed in a different direction from home. Often we ended up in Berkeley, Chinatown, at a pier or the park in San Francisco.

Each of the three girls had a same color jacket ( for easily spotting by me ) and a brown bag each containing a bag of cookies and a carton of milk.  At the park some of the "bums" would say to me

you sure have sweet children because they would always offer cookies to the men. That brought a smile and a story on these men's  faces.

I was always present watching the girls every move while they climbed trees ( something their Dad said little girls could not do)...

I saw nothing wrong with my children mingling with others as they were safe with me present.

We  were always home before 5pm to our quiet and dull home with dinner on the table.

Later on these children turned out to be kind and caring adults without judgement on how others looked  or ethnic backgrounds etc.

How nice that they had a mother so kind and open hearted and taught them that everybody is equal  in the eyes of God and should be in humanity also.

Thank you  Zochitl

I was just passing on what Ma and Dad taught me,

only one of my daughters chose to marry and have children,

and she taught them to respect others also.

Thank you  ICE~MAN...you have some wise words here ~ Julia
