FAMED MOVIE SET CLOSES TO PUBLIC

BRACKETTVILLE (San Antonio Express-News) – Moviegoers probably remember it as the set of the 1960 John Wayne film "The Alamo," but owners of the 500-acre Alamo Village compound have announced its indefinite closure to the public.

Owner J.T. Shahan hopes to "reconstruct management and possibly redirect our efforts toward new positive goals."

The famed locale is still available for large events such as trail rides and weddings, and movie producers are still being encouraged to shoot there.

Located 120 miles west of San Antonio, Alamo Village has been the scene of scores of movies, TV shows, commercials and other video productions.

Its no matter,, that movie was a total fabrication, there wasnt an ounce of truth in it and the buildings were all wrong anyway.

I didn't realize John Wayne played Davy Crockette! I can tell right now, Davy NEVER looked like that! But then I guess one would never catch The Duke in long hair! What a hoot! Totally historically INaccurate!

The movie the set was built for The Alamo was a movie John Wayne paid for out of his own pocket. No studio would produce it for him so he did it himself. The movie cost over 12 million dollars and did not make a profit till sometime after John Wayne died. It was way over buget for the time.

So it was kind of like a John Wayne showcase? If he took the time to pay for it out of his own pocket, one would think he would have taken the time to research and make sure the movie was relatively accurate. But then, if one is paying for the movie out of one's own pocket, one certainly has the right to take as many liberties with history as one wants to.

Not knocking John Wayne, just making a few comments. He made some good movies.

Burt Lancaster played Geronimo, too, and that was totally politically incorrect (though not at the time).

Okay, just 'cause The Duke's wearin' a coonskin cap don't make him no Davy Crockett! Does The Duke die at the end of this movie? 'Cause the real Davy Crockette died at the Alamo. One of my favorite Crockett-isms is, "Always be sure you are right, then go ahead."
