Ambassador Rice has said she is done this afternoon, done with her possible appointment to replacing Secretary Clinton.  A surprise, yes, inevitable no, repercussion, certainly.

The president had appeared to be willing to put up Rice and fight for the nomination but that had started to fade in the further vetting of Ambassador Rice, the Benghazi affair and the political capital expenditure for approving the nomination, plus, how the process would diminish the standing of what a SoS needs to be, confident and credible.

So, next, that is. who is next?  Senator Kerry would be the odds on, but there is a political cost for appointing Kerry for any cabinet position and that is a vacant senate seat that has a possibility of being filled by a Republican, in particular, ex-Senator Brown.  Nominate a Republican?  Not going to happen, so, it moves into a wider look as to who it could be and who it needs to be.

In the meantime, Secretary Clinton is going to have a long day or so before congress as she has to explain what she knew, when did she know it and who she is going to finger for the blame, or is she going to wait to tell all in her next book.

John Kerry, I think he would have been the nominee anyway. That said Susan Rice got a really raw deal.
The Senate seat would not go to a republican. there are lots of qualified Democrats who would make an excellent Senator.

Well, what is next is John Kerry secretarial nomination and the expected senate's advise and consent to the nomination.  What is also next is the scheduling, or not, of Hillary Clinton's examination by congress as to her knowledge and involvement in the affair in Benghazi.

The report is out and it isn't pretty, not so pretty that the underlings have already taken the hits by resigning their posts.

Overall, what this says about where we are on the war on terrorism is that it is ongoing, and for some we should just say Mission Accomplished knowing we will have future attacks and will be dealing with the continuing struggle between the West and those that oppose most of what the West represents for decades to come.
