Dostoevsky. Crime and Punishment. I read it as a kid, then picked it up again on this trip. (This time son was reading it.) Absolutely rivetting.

I just finished Infidel (what a brave woman!) and was ready to start on Satanic Verses (S. Rushdie) before I was diverted. Next I just MUST re-read The Brothers Karamazov. Theres a reason this stuff is classical.

What about you? What's in your reading pile?

I'm reading "The Longing" by Beverly Lewis. It is set in Amish country.
Almost finished with Texas Rifles by Elmer Kelton, one of Texas's best Western Novelists.
I try not to read anything that makes me think any deeper than I'm capable of.
I'm reading Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls and Pilgrms by Garrison Keillor, both at the same time b/c I purchased them at the same time and can't make up my mind. "Horses" is gritty and engrossing b/c based on grandma's real life as a pioneer. It's a nice fast read. I've read better by Keillor, but "Pioneers" is well-written, with those homey insights.
Still working on, "Shaker Songs a celebration of peace, harmony, and simplicity" compiled by Christian Goodwillie.
I recently finished two books by Ken Follett; "The Pillars of the Earth" and it's sequel "World Without End". I realize they have been around for some time, especially the first one, but finally got around to them. If you like historical fiction, Mr. Follett does a wonderful job of bringing the 12th century alive.
I just finished the first book of the Chronicles of the Rain Wilds, "Dragon Keeper" by Robin Hobb, and have started on the second one, "Dragon Haven."
I'm not sure whether they would be classified as fantasy or science fiction.
Recently Finished: K.G.B. Today - The Hidden Hand by John Barron ca. 1983 Reader's Digest Press

Currently Reading:The Russian Secret Police by Ronald Hingley ca. 1970 Dorset Press edition ca. 1990
Still on "Worth Dying For," by Lee Childe. Amazing how Jack Reacher can kill so many, own so little. and know so much. The triumph of the classic hero... such a masculine fantasy guy, but I like him too.
I'm well into Barbara Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible - fantastic writing, each chapter from the point of view of a different member of the family.
"The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. Very nicely written, but the movie departs from the plot points in major ways. The book is much darker.
I read the Asbury park Press today.
And later I will read the Blood-Horse magazine and The Thoroughbred Times.
I just finished "The Little White Horse", a children's book by my favorite author Elizabeth Goudge.
This book was reportedly a favorite of J.K. Rowling when she was a child.
Very gentle fantasy.

Now I am trying to get used to my new Kindle that I have loaded up with classics.
Perhaps I will finally read "Moby Dick" while cruising the Antarctic.
