This reminds of this...I had forgotten this. When My Dad was assigned as an ROTC instructor in a suburb of Chicago, my parents bought a house in a kind of upscale neighborhood I guess. Anyway, there were conditions written into the deed..which apparently was legal back then. The house could not be sold to Negroes or Jews. My Dad was dumbfounded and took it to a lawyer...it was illegal by then. Some of you might expect that in the South...but in the Midwest?

In NJ which was basically integrated forever, my father made ornamental railing for Packanack Lake, a lovely community near near Wayne, NJ.  He was allowed to design and install for the people there, but Italians and Jews were not allowed to buy houses there.  They got away with it because they called themselves a "golf community." And it was the 50s and 60s.

Funny thing is when I was divorced and dating, I dated a guy whose father was the director of the community way back then, and he verified that Jews and Italians were not allowed.  I wonder, since they were not mentioned, if blacks were allowed--don't think so.

There's one painting that my mother did that I want and that is of her friend that she used to go out with to jazz clubs in NYC with. It was hanging in the music room of our house. Mom's friend was obviously Black.( There's so many people ,if they could pass for white in spite of not having 100% Caucasian ancestors they did.)

i still have a deed from a property in palm springs which details that not only were you not allowed to sell to 'anyone not of the caucasian race' but that no one not of the caucasian race was allowed to spend the night at your house except for hired domestic staff such as cooks, butlers or maids...the good old days.....

I think this was the perfect solution.  The complaining party didn't have to sit next to the person she found offensive, and the person who should have been offended by the complainer didn't have to sit next to her.  Would have worked whichever person was doing the griping, whether it was because or race, sex, religion, sexual orientation or body odor.  And whoever thought they were too good to sit next to the other person deserved to stay put while the other person is given some respect back.
