I am trying to finish The Sweet Life by William Sinunu. It is one of the most thought provoking yet simply written books I've read in a long time. Using vingnettes, the author takes the readers on an uncharted tour of the practices and beliefs of many cultures around the world. I appreciate the insights into the cultural mindsets of the different countries these vignettes gave me particularly on nurturing "the sweet life".-- communal baths, vacation time, well prepared meals, remembering the dead, etc.

BETH!!! Miss ya...
I am headed to the Library in a few minutes to pick up The Lantern.
I read a review that compared it to Rebecca, which in one of my favorite books. I don't know how anything can compare, but I'll give it a shot...
I tried to read a short book by humorist Patrick F. McManus. I didn't find it very humorous.
Started the Roy Blount, Jr. book (full title) "Alphabet Juice: The Energies, Gists, and Spirits of Letters, Words, and Combinations Thereof: Their Roots, Bones, Innards, Piths, Pips, and Secret Parts, Tinctures, Tonics, and Essences: With Examples of Their Usage Foul and Savory." It's interesting but it's in dictionary form so it doesn't have any specific flow.
So, now, I've started my third Wilkie Collins book, Armadale, which sucked me in with the first chapter.
well, I know what I'm not reading.....any of those Penthouse magazines I bought back in the day.
I wish I hadn't thrown them out over the years....I'd like to, uh, review some of the articles again.
William Least Heat Moon has written a couple of books of traveling the road. "Blue Highways" was written in the early 1980s; the story of a young adventurer traveling America in a aging van. "Road to Quoz" (Heat-Moon is now hyphenated) tells of more recent travels, now with a somewhat snarky yuppie wife in tow.
Sigh.......its hard not to succumb to taking the easier road as we age.
Keep on keeping it back to the basics, B A F......you're living a much richer road life that way. ;-)
I just finished Stieg Larsson's second book of the Millennium series - The Girl Who Played w/Fire. I loved it. Way better than the first. You know that saying, "I couldn't put it down"? I have a confession to make. I was off from work yesterday. Picked up the book to read just for a bit before I got going w/my day- and spent the DAY reading the last 150 or so pages! I couldn't put it down!
So, if you've read the first one, or tried reading it & abandoned it for lack of interest, I recommend finishing it & moving on to this one. It's one of those books where I'm sorry it's over & I have to leave it behind.
I recently read Rules of Civility by Amor Towles.
Best book I've read in ages. The story was interesting, but the author's use of words and language was just beautiful!
Currently reading The Lantern. If it doesn't get better soon it's going back.
I did not like the Stieg Larrson books. I forced myself to finish the first one. I was told the second was better. After torturing myself for about 200 pages I gladly abandoned the damn thing!
oh, no! Well, I didn't love the first one, either. I forced myself through the first third or so; then really enjoyed the middle third or so, then was disappointed in the remainder. But the 2nd one I thoroughly enjoyed - especially the last half, which you missed. :-(
...going to Google Rules of Civility now.
I just finished "One Second After". Very depressing. Especially since I Know about and understand EMP.
I normally try to just not think about it.
I haven't read any of the Stieg Larsson books. However, I did see the the Movie "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". Thought it was a great movie.
Just started reading Raymond Chandler's The Little Sister w/Ducatiman.
I now have Rules of Civility on my reading list, tx to Q, & Loving What Is, tx to my bff. Plus I want to read the last of the Larrson series, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, PLUS my new home is a library in & of itself. All my free time is going to be spent reading!!
