The Kentucky Derby and the Classic Mint Julep -- A Marriage Made in Heaven

By Art Namendorf

April 30, 2010, 9:44AM

Mint Julep.pngSaturday, May 1, 2010, marks the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby. It also marks the copious and conspicuous downing of the Derby’s favorite cocktail, the mint julep. It was served at Churchill Downs’ opening in 1875 and is now the official drink of the run for the roses.

This libationary fusion of bourbon and mint is both full of history and shrouded in tradition. Lauded by writers, it is even jokingly claimed to be the real cause of the Civil War

Here is the article about John Court, the jocky aboard Line of David in their Arkansas Derby win. His mother graduated high school with me. The whole family has this kind of character.

Think I'll go with Paddy O'Prada just like the name
Thats why I don't play the ponies, I'll take show.
They all finished it's a good day.
I always bet show. My first pick Ice Box came in 2nd so I would have at least broke even.

Larry hope you didn't put it all on Ice box to win. If you put it on him to show, you owe me a beer.
There were some really ostentatious hats, but none that outdid our PRU. You go girl.
Horses and flowers seemed to carry the day

The guy who won the dream bet could have used a better one. Guess he can afford one now.
Or craw fish!
