Texas man pays off over 60 school lunch debts so children can eat

Dallas resident, Kenny Thompson was–like most of us–completely appalled when he heard about that school in Utah seizing and throwing out the lunches of children “in debt” to the school’s lunch program. Being not only a parent, but also a tutor and mentor to children at other schools, Thompson wondered if there was anything similar going on in his area. Unsurprisingly, there was.

Thompson found that dozens of children in his area were on “reduced lunches”–meaning that instead of a hot meal, they got cold cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, because their parents had fallen behind on payments on the lunches–which cost about 40 cents a day.

So he decided to do something. He forked over $465 of his own money to cover the debts of the over 60 students whose accounts had gone into the red.

Via KPRC-TV:

“These are elementary school kids. They don’t need to be worried about finances,” said Thompson. “They need to be worried about what grade they got in spelling.”

Thompson says many kids he knows with negative accounts forgo the lunch line altogether to avoid embarrassment. But that’s bad for education as physicians have linked classroom performance with proper nutrition.

Thompson believes he made a difference when he made the decision to help those students.

“When I left the building knowing that they were getting fed, they didn’t have that stress,” said Thompson. “The best money I ever spent.”

I was raised on peanut butter sandwiches.

What a great way to teach kids to pay their bills.

They will expect others to pay their bills when they grow up..

It wasn't the kids' bill in the first place, darroll.

Although I understand your point, I think what this engenders is gratitude, and the realization that giving a little can make a big difference. I believe it's likely that when these kids grow up they'll feel thankful for the kindness and be far more apt to want to find ways to help than ways to shirk their responsibilities.

I agree with DD, thanks for posting this Tee.

Every act of kindness makes such a difference, most of all to the giver. Thank goodness there are people like Mr. Thompson who get it.

Pittsburgh man donates house Updated: Friday, February 7 2014, 05:42 PM CST

Here's a story from the Pittsburgh area that will warm your heart. A complete stranger donated a house to a family that lost theirs in a fire. About a week ago, Lori Rippy and Vaughan Lutton watched their Aliquippa home burn to the ground. Four kids, no insurance, no savings, and completely homeless. George heard this family's story and offered up a home, at no cost. "It feels like I hit the lottery. That's what it feels like," said Vaughn Luton.  "Nothing feels more comfortable than knowing that at the end of the day you have a place to go that you can call your own, we owe it all to God and people like George that's come through for us when we needed him." "I'm just amazed by the outpour of love shown by complete strangers," Lori said. George happens to work for Columbia Gas and the company is offering the family hook-up and assistance with their gas.

HOORAY, George!!! (And Columbia Gas.)

This was filmed in 1988 many of these people would still be alive today.

... his face wen he realizes who he is sitting beside. Giants walk among us.

That brought tears to my eyes.  Beautiful story.
