What do you call your evening meal?.....your noon meal?
Being raised on a farm in North Central Texas the noon meal was dinner and the evening meal was supper. Lunch was a sandwich you took to school or something you ate in the shade of a Cottonwood tree at the edge of the hay field. If you were near the house at noon, there was a meal...not a snack.

When I started dating back in the early sixties we just said, "I'm going to take her out to eat." Now, you never took a girl out at noon so it was understood you were going out to supper.....we just didn't always say that.
The next day if the previous night's date was brought up, one might say, "We had supper last night at......."
I think maybe it's a cultural, regional thing for the most part.
I grew up in California with Breakfast, Lunch then Dinner. Super was just another word for Dinner.
Some of my wife's family are from Southern states, I still do not keep the difference straight.
I figure if I goof it up they look at it as just another mixed up Californian (GRIN)
Plain and simple....breakfast...lunch....dinner...I'm set in my Yankee ways and I'm not changing! If you're hungry than you'll eat when it's ready.....right?
Yes, Ma'am...and glad to get it.
In my younger years: Breakfast, dinner, supper. Lunch was at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., as in, "Let's have a little coffee."

Now: Breakfast, lunch, supper. I can't get used to calling the evening meal "dinner".

I still have "a little coffee" now and then.
It is neither "Supper" nor "Dinner".

It is THE GREAT GORGING, THE DEVOURING OF ALL THAT CAN NOT ESCAPE, THE NIGHT OF THE GNAWED, ROASTED BONES OF OUR OWN FOES, THE FEEDING OF THE MIGHTY VIKING HOARDE.

Y'know, just a light snack, really.
My Dad did all the cooking when camping and his days off, and morning, noon, or night, he would just say "grubs on", or "it's hot, come an get it". Mom would say breakfast, lunch or dinner's ready, wash up. When my sons appetites grew, I would just cook more then enough for everyone, but I wouldn't call the boys to the table. This way I eliminated the competition, and ate my share first .... When my wife is cookin, I don't ask about dinner or whatnot, I just say "whaterweeatin?" ........
