TBD

TBD on Ning

Let's imagine that you are a person who has heard about social networking and think maybe you will give it a try. You are in your mid 50s and would like to connect with people somewhere near your age for discussions, playing games, finding out more about various things available to people in your age group and possibly even dating.

How would you go about it? Do you think you would ever find TBD?

Try it. If you had some but not extensive knowledge about how to use the internet and wanted to try social networking; how would you go about it?

How would you find TBD?

Funny how our brains receive information differently. I've seen many comments like yours, WL, about "TBD what?" & "what does TBD stand for?" When I saw it, I just recognized it as "To Be Determined" - that THAT's the tagline. But obviously we need a tagline that lures ppl in.
I'm wondering if displaying a somewhat tawdry picture of Ms Farquar would start bringin' 'em in.
I think he means in a multicolored tee shirt. Or maybe we could put up a picture of you after you have used your non-dominate hand to apply makeup.
I was kinda thinking of a well turned calf (leg, not animal, that is).
Sounds like BBQ. Glad you clarified.

I googled TeeBeeDee this morning, while thinking about how to find us on the net. Here's one thing I came up with:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/TeeBeeDee/184441280570

I'd like to know who it is that's calling themselves TeeBeeDee and posting this as a motto:
TeeBeeDee (tbd.com) stands for "To Be Determined" -- because we built this site to connect all of us who think that life is still To Be Determined.

Unless it's Robin, I think it's a little nervy.
I think that was a "We like......" kind of site, started as a kind of TBD1 fan club, and never taken down. It doesn't seem to be very active.

Founded in 2006
Robbie...Since I love research and have too much time on my hands :-) I took your challenge and tried to see if I "could find TBD".

Please note though that I am a bit late to this discussion (I thought we were losing TBD and haven't been around for a bit) and I might be misinformed or unaware of somethings, sooooooo bare with me :-)

1. When I googled social networks with a variety of tags such as "boomers" "mature" "adults"...etc. not once did I come up with teebeedee.ning. I came up with Ning and I came up with TBD, but not this site on Ning.
2. Most concerning was more than once I came up with a list that offered "TBD" and when I clicked on the link it was for this: http://tbd.com/ which appears to be a networking site that is for bloggers. I believe this site is relatively new. Without researching it further (and I will if you wish), it raised a red flag for me because this site appears to have staff and money behind it and if that is true, whatever we do to market Teebeedee.ning is going to become confusing for people to find us "without" a direct link and our making it as viral as possible.
If TBD.com has staff and money behind it,we may not be able to make ourselves "viral" enough to be found by doing a google or other search engine search.
3. This leads me to the question regarding money. Can someone please PM me regarding the status of this. I have read that ning is no longer going to be free and also I believe I saw a discussion regarding paying a small monthly fee.
Over the years, I have been involved with social networking sites that have tried this and I have not once seen it work out. Generally what happens is you have a small group that loves the site so much that they will pay, but the group dwindles as people move on and new people won't want to pay because they don't have the same attachment to the site.
4. I agree with needing an identifiable brand and think with the right approach we can still hold on to the TBD tag if Robin allows, but I think we need real money to do that. I will hold off on my thoughts on how maybe to go about doing that once I bring myself "up to speed" on the discussions already held regarding this.

I hope we are able to save Teebeedee.ning. TBD1 meant a great deal to me and the friendships I have made through teebeedee are more "authentic" than any other friendships I have been able to make at this age. Now, that doesn't mean I am unfriendly in real life, but I think many of us know that it is easier to make friends relaxing on the computer than running through the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives.

Sorry for the length and the late in the discussion response :-)

Janne, it's great to have you back in action again. I think a lot of folks are in the same situation, they sort of drifted off and are out of the loop for information.

When we left the original TBD, many members offered monetary support if that's what it would take to keep it running. It couldn't work there, but it has here. The cost per year will be around $200, and a core of members who cared enough to keep it going have pledged to raise that in order to keep it free, sort of like public television pledge drives do. (Anyone who is interested in helping can join the Stalwarts group.) So TBD on Ning is not in danger, never really was, in spite of all the noise. Nothing is changing in the site. But we have been weakened by the rumors, and by attrition, entropy, call it what you will.

There will always be an ebb and flow, and we are trying to turn the tide to make it a more lively place to hang out.
I have posted again, the link to TBD on my Facebook page. This time I posted the link directly to the Welcome Lounge. Janne, I know you saw yesterday's link, commented on it and came back over. I'm hoping to have some other visitors as well. Thanks Janne!
Thanks, Cat! That's the way we need to do it.
