Quality of life is contingent on life conditions and personal satisfaction
congruent with one's value system.  Are you happy with yours?

Do you think this flowchart reflects accurately the factors
which produce the OUTPUT of happiness. I am surprised
I don't see spirituality somewhere in the "Throughput."

Quality of Life Parable

The American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, "only a little while."

The American then asked "why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish?"

The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs.

The American then asked, "but what do you do with the rest of your time?"

The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life."

The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise."

The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?"

To which the American replied, "15-20 years."

"But what then?"

The American laughed and said that's the best part. "When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions."

"Millions.. Then what?"

The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."

Zig Ziglar: Quality Quotes
If standard of living is your major objective, quality of life almost never improves, but if quality of life is your number one objective, your standard of living almost always improves.

Martin Van Buren: Quality Quotes
It is easier to do a job right than to explain why you didn't.

Ralph Waldo Emerson: Quality Quotes
It is not length of life, but depth of life.

Mahatma Gandhi: Quality Quotes
It is the quality of our work which will please God and not the quantity.

Josh Billings: Quality Quotes

One of the rarest things that a man ever does, is to do the best he can.
Love the fisherman story!
Boothby, so why does our culture tend to perpetuate greedy capitalism? You'd think we've learned our lesson by now. What do you plan to do when you retire?
To me, it seemed like a poor quality of life that they are living. I am speaking of my son, 2 stepsons, and my grown nephew and his wife...oh, also, my brother, a grocery store manager for KROGER..where he practically LIVES.

My decision to live in the Philippines was definitely reinforced after viewing the way people in the USA are killing themselves to get "stuff." Kendall, my nephew, I helped him finish building a shed in his back yard in Dallas to store some of his "stuff" in and his garage is still a mess! Yep. My quality of life compared to folks I know personally in the USA....no comparison!

I agree with your appreciation of the quality of life over there. A few things I miss about the Philippines (not that I ever lived there) is the camaraderie, sense of roots (heritage), and the spirituality that underscores daily life.
I am satisfied with my life, while recognizing that it could be better, that I could be a better person.

I am frustrated by the types of attitudes that your jokes and quotes illustrate, because I think that is our (most Americans') main obstacle to an even finer quality of life.

Oh, and I think that if I had lots of boxes and circles, like you do, Maricel, my life would be even better!

(just fooling around, don't mean anything by it)

Animak,
I'm more full of spirals, strings, and double helix than primary shapes. lol
I respond more viscerally to mandalas and fractals though that would
confuse many people.
Myself, I wouldn't worry about confusing people. They start out that way, not your fault.

I agree with Animak, the boxes above make me want to shut down...lol I do like your quote and I try to do the best I can but I know I can do better but for now I am pretty satisfied.
LoL
The flowchart is from http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2006/01/13110743/2
which I posted earlier in the Forum in response to 1Greatlady's topic Quality of Life (limited to Healthcare)
I don't think that rationally. I'm more inclined to be holistic.
LOL..I like your holistic, honestly I saw the boxes and wanted to run. I love the circles and spirals but what about the pyramid?

Thank you for the fisheman story..I really liked it.
