" All's Fair in Love and War: Stories from the Front"
(title courtesy of Suuse, who wrote : "Of course, my story *must* begin "In hindsight...." ;-)

The war of the sexes. Mistakes we have made that involved the opposite sex. Or the same sex.
Whomever, we all know it involved sex!

I'll return soon with my dozy of a story. Some of the myriad number of components included  one dinner party, the Internet, phone calls, several Caribbean islands, a Cat 4 hurricane, New Scotland Yard, a prime minister, a (very) dangerous and wanted criminal, America's Most Wanted (yes - them! )
a  wedding, and my idiocy.
Lord - what WAS I THINKING - oh wait . . . I wasn't. Sigh.

I need a day or two to construct it to protect the innocent. The Caribbean at a certain level is like a very small club. But it's a story friends have wanted me to write about for years.
 I'm feeling the urge.

In the mean time - if anyone else wants to start with their story of how they got themselves tagged, in a pickle, duped, out manoeuvred, Internet romanced and fooled, etc. please do!  We can really learn form one an other's mistakes! Plus it just feels good to dish the dirt.  No names mind, let's be our usual discreet selves!

*Thanks Suuse for a great title and MzJean for your suggestion and to Dogdreams Three for yet again inspiring me!*

As with Dazztales, stories from this war correspondent will require that certain names be changed to protect the guilty. ;-)
"New York Romance"

Music and Lyrics: Rusty Magee

It's a New York romance; it's a casual romance, and it happens every day.
It's a promise to phone; it's a promise you can't keep; it's a promise not to stay.
It's a meaningful glance in an unfamiliar place.
It's a lover whom you've lived with till you couldn't stand his face.
It's a disappointing dinner.
It's a charitable chase.
It's a New York romance.

It's an East-Side romance or a West-Side romance, and it's played out after dark.
It's a kiss on Broadway or a smile on Bleecker, it's a blow-out in the park.
It's a fight on 47th Street, you let her run away.
It's him turning up so drunk and stoned, you pray that he won't stay.
It's a never-ending argument, it's the only matinee.
It's a New York romance.

It's a moving romance; it's a stifling romance; it's a romance of the street.
It's a "he said" romance or an "I meant" romance — it depends on who you meet.
It's a subway door that closes and you only see the pain
Or a bagel at Grand Central while you're waiting for her train.
It's a cross-town connection; it's a taxi in the rain.
It's a New York romance.

It's all the times you thought that you were going, but you didn't go, you stayed.
It's all the times you thought that you were making love, when you were getting laid.
It's a New York romance; it's a ringside romance; it's a terrible surprise.
It's a last-ditch romance; it's a desperate romance, telling hopeful little lies.
It's the girl you thought might be Miss Right, till you find out she's a bore.
Or the guy who said he'd stay all night who's halfway out the door.
It's a great big apple you're afraid is rotten at the core.
Taking so much shit from lovers that they're not friends anymore.
It's a wanting to be far away on some distant shore.
It's a careful desperation.
It's not caring anymore.
It's a New York romance.

And that, my dears, is the polite and tidy version of my marriage to a "N8V NYCR".
Speechless (imagine that) ! What a way to tell a tale, succinctly!
I LOVE this song. Every word of it just resonates for me.

There's a version of this available on iTunes sung by Alison Fraser--who was Mrs. Magee. "Was", as Rusty died of cancer. But he left us such lovely tunes to remember him by.
I'm still working on this. It's a complicated story worthy of a . . . well let's just say I've got to construct something brilliant because it was - extremely funny. In hindsight.

Right MKW ? (She will be here soon - I swear. ) I mean I almost lost my best friend over this fiasco. No way am I telling the story without her by my side.

In the mean time, please share. It's not just the Susse & Di. tales of befuddlement and OMG what was I (we - that means YOU TOO) not thinking!!!?
Yup. Clever Suuse - she found a bloody SONG that summed it all up . . . . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that's a bloody tough act to follow!!!!!!!!!!!!?! Sigh. My only consolation is that it's so like not her only story . . . hahahahaah so eventually she has to come up with yet another . . . some thing or other /;-D

............. and she will ! Because - well - a challenge is what we live for!

(All of us!;-)
It's immensely helpful to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of lyrics, circa 1935 - 2010.

Of course, now I feel that I should simply tell my war stories in lyrics. ;)
Alannah Myles recorded this tune written (at her request) by Christopher Ward and David Tyson.

This is the one I think Dazz is looking for:

The last time I saw William, he was as good as gone
He'd packed up all his poetry and his hurtin' songs
Well they say that he died, but the papers lied
About our long lost favourite song
And the last time I saw William, he was all undone

He'd lost his bag of thunder, and his brave disguise
He was trying to find some kind of peace of mind with brand new eyes
But it all came back in shades of black, like a past that's just begun
And the last time I saw William, he was a man on the run

He said it's better to fly than to hold on to shaky ground
It's better to let the feelings die, when they're holding you down
I saw a long line of loneliness in the corner of his eye
But I never did see William cry

Now the years run down the boulevard, and the marquee is long gone
There's a troubadour in an empty bar, playin' hurtin' songs
All the gold and praise from the glory days cannot save our souls tonight
And the last time that I saw William
He was walking away, walking away from the light

It's better to fly than to hold on to shaky ground
It's better to let the feelings die, when they're holding you down
I saw a long line of loneliness in the corner of his eye
But I never did see William cry

The last time I saw William, he was all undone
Hahahahaha! Yes Suuse - this fits the man I gave twenty years of my life to - with a year off here and there for bad behaviour mind . . .and yes, I never did see him cry. But I did hear his heart break - and it was all his own doing. He will always be "undone". He likes it in the land of neither here nor there.
A Secret Agent ~ of Karma am I !
~ Not the Caribbean tale - just a little ditty 'bout a bounder of a man, a slippery spider, a definite cad.

Once upon a time a wee lass was taken up by a very naughty lad, who courted and called and danced an amorous fandango with her and other fine lassies. Being a clever Wiccan woman (though naive in the ways of such a diabolical warlock) she gazed long and hard through her bubble of joy, and finding herself deceived, cast a year long spell upon the slippery spider.

How old am I? I'll be 92 next Christmas, though I won't admit to one day over 21 ~ even after all the fears that eat away at my slender grace. I've aged at least 500 years since I stumbled into you, yet I still believe in faerie tales like the Princess and the Frog and I still believe you wanted me ... perhaps I'm only three or so? Beginnings beyond the sea broke the heart as it gazed upon the absolute of fact and now you'll never know . . . how old I really am but I'll give you a hint, I was born the hour I gave you my heart and I died today, and it's only late September. Oh well here is my hex upon you and tomorrow will be much better, and I'll be younger, and I can do what ever I want, so I'm going to be free and travel where I please.

Abracadabra! Rippled water tears, pickled pumpkin butterfly ears. North Winds! Blow across his fear of years, for I, a vagrant solitaire have left my trace upon him. Ah. There goes one of the lost, whilst I away to dance my madcap moonlight way. Now it is time for you to go, leave this "space" and GO! When I arrive in Baillieston as a chill wind blows October over Glasgow you will not hear me ring, but you will always remember my song, it will sing in your ears, forever. Karma travels by my side seeking out the foolhardy and the cowardly, thus as you have done to others, so shall it be done unto you.

*With a deep bow to Linda Goodman, for the memory of her poetry, there are notes here of her wise voice, derivative, yes indeed, but honourably re-arranged. I know she would understand. Fellow Aries always do. Linda, I miss you. *

Every exit is an entry somewhere else ~ Tom Stoppard
Thank you for this quote Suuse ~ and for the idea for an alternate title ;-D
Very cool Dazz....I haven't heard the name "Linda Goodman" for years. I used to read her "Star Signs" long ago.
Quelle coincidence! I wrote the copy that appeared/appears on the trade paperback of "Linda Goodman's Star Signs".

Yeah. Weird.
