For pete's sake. I can't remember the name of the last movie that dealt with this same subject matter...anyway, I may need to see or hear more info on this one before I commit. John Cusack is like Keanu Reeves. Hit or miss.
The CGI looks OK.
Max, too many movies (recently Knowing with the other hit or miss actor Nick Cage). Before that The Day After. Lets looks back....
The Omega Man, Dr. Strangelove, Planet of the Apes just to name my favorites!
The main problem is the story. Sure in 2012 there are going to be alot of natural disasters which are going to leave most of the world dead. Yes, we can swallow that. In fact we don't mind swallowing that because the special effects are good and exciting and drives this movie.
What makes me snort in derision or laugh (in an "yeah right" way, not a funny way) is the fact that the story puts the hero into extremely impossible situations where he alone manages to save himself and those he loves. This is done a little too much and on too grand a scale. It makes the audience start pulling back from being emersed into the movie.
That, along with the fact that only the Amercians seem to have the answer is also a little unrealistic. The other world leaders leave the Americans to solve the 2012 problem and to tell them that they need to keep their humanity and "open the gates" (you'll know what I'm talking about if you saw the movie). This is again fine, it's Hollywood, but that's the problem. It leaves the story as just okay. A really good disaster movie grabs the audience and holds on with a story that seems so possible it's terrifying.
Everything else is good. The acting is good. You've got seasoned actors like John Cusack, Oliver Platt, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover, and there's Chiwetel Ejiofor who does a good job as the heart of the movie. Thandie Newton and Amanda Peet and the other supporting cast keep things moving along fine. The directing and editing is also hands on and keeps the movie afloat where the story weighs it down.
Overall, an okay movie, that could have been better with a little tweeking here and there of the script.
I'm willing to ignore a lot of crazy, impossible to believe scenes in movies, and to simply enjoy a movie for what it is, but 2012 was just too much. At one point, Woody Harrelson stands on the "edge" of a supervolcano, watching it erupt. He gets knocked down by the blast from the volcano, gets up and screams his joy as flaming boulders fall all around him. I mean COME ON!!! The blast would have incinerated him in reality. But that's not all, Cusack is able to outdrive the blast. Anyway, I thought that one scene was just too much, and it ruined the movie for me.
One other thing - if supervolcanos erupted all over the world, according to 2012, the sky would be clear within a month. And here I thought the particles would remain in the atmosphere for years, likely giving us a version of nuclear winter for a few years. My bad.
I have to disagree guys. It was better than I expected. It is well made, well directed, well acted, a good story, with plenty of action and drama. Plus it was touching, educational and great entertainment. Some movies will be outfitted with certain seats that will be fitted with a system that makes you feel the power of earthquakes, and explosions, etc. it shook the theater, even beyond the seats. The disasters were incredible. You will catch yourself flinching, twisting, and holding your breath at times. This is a must see movie at a good theater, don't wait to see it on a rental movie. there is so much going on, that seeing it more than once will be just as entertaining the second time. The effects are top notch. The explosion of Yellowstone was amazing. seeing the earth bulge up, beforehand reminded me of what happened at Mt. St Helens in 1980.
I am not a dooms-day type person, but I found the scientific part of such a disaster compelling and educational. the theory beyond the disaster possibility are the huge solar flare explosions that heat up the earth's magma core like a micro wave. The resulting heat causes the continents to start moving, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, and huge ocean waves. Enjoy it as a typical disaster movie, where you don't have to do a lot of thinking, just be entertained.
