Cover Of The Day:
"Oh Lord, Don't Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb On Me". by Charles Mingus, released April, 1962, on his album "Oh Yeah"
Covered here by the New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers, from their second album, simply titled "Vol. 2", recorded 2007, but unreleased until 2021
Today, in Musical History, April 27th, 2006: Keith Richards takes a tumble out of a palm tree while vacationing in Fiji, and suffers a concussion.
How great would it have been if he'd woke up in the hospital, and started speaking perfect Queen's English ?
Both Ms. Harjo and Smithsonian Folkways are American treasures.
Cover Of The Day:
"Walkin' After Midnight" (Alan Block / Don Hecht), #2 C&W, 4/27/1957 (Patsy Cline's version itself was actually a cover; the song was first recorded by Lynn Howard & the Accents, which sounded more like Jo Stafford backed by the the Ink Spots, with Wes Montgomery on guitar. Kind of ...odd.)
This cover, by Rhoda Dakar, appeared on her 2023 album "Version Girl" (Ms. Dakar is an old hand at the ska and rock steady thing, having recorded with the Specials and other 2-Tone artists back in the '70's)
Today, in Musical History, April 28th, 1982: Fundamentalist christian "experts" appear before the California General Assembly and lie through their teeth, claiming that they clearly and repeatedly heard "satanic messages" when they played Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" backwards; Silly horseshit such as ""Here’s to my sweet Satan", "The one little Sad Satan", "He’ll give me 666", "There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan" -
Yet, strangely, when they played the recording backwards for listening legislators, none of that tripe could be heard.
CLEARLY, the only possible explanation is that Satan was in that chamber, and used his magic powers to make the fundaloonies look like panicky, dishonest, hysterical shitheads.
Cover Of The Day:
'Strange Things Happenin' Every Day", #2 R&B, 4/28/1945 (Sister Rosetta Tharpe)
Valerie June covers it on the soundtrack to a 2023 documentary, "Little Richard: I Am Everything"
