I love Dusty. The only time I ever entered a radio contest was for a sh*tload of Beatles stuff in '64, I think. I didn't win the Beatles gear, but I did win Dusty's eponymous album.

Ms. Springfield's debut album was actually No. 1 on the UK charts, for one week...

Until the Beatles' debut album came along, and knocked it out of first place.

Yeah, bad timing for Dusty. I loved that album. So many great songs that really appealed to an adolescent girl, and still appeal to me 60 years later.

Today, in Musical History, February 13th, 1961:

Ever wonder how Sinatra got the nickname "The Chairman of the Board" - ?

It's because, on this day, he created the Reprise record label (after failing to buy the Verve record label), and placed himself as, well, the chairman of the board.

He founded Reprise on the idea of the artist - starting with Sinatra himself, of course - having complete artistic freedom, AND full ownership of their own work; I'd bet that Ol' Blue Eyes never expected his boutique label to eventually sign and release such notorious conformists as Frank Zappa, Neil Young, Captain Beefheart, Jimi Hendrix, and Tiny Tim.

Cover Of The Day:

Yes, Bill, you DO have a "silver machine".

(Most people just call it a "CPAP machine", but whatever.)

"Silver Machine", recorded 2/13/1972, by Hawkwind, and released as a single a few months later.

The Shat's version comes from one of his many covers collections, 2011's "Seeking Major Tom"

Hahaha! The Shat. Perfect.

Laurie Anderson releases her second album, "Mister Heartbreak"

Cover Of The Day:

"The Creator Has A Master Plan (Peace)" - recorded 2/14/1969, by Pharoah Sanders, and released on his album,"Karma"

Louie Armstrong covered it on his 1970 album "Louis Armstrong & His Friends"

(Louie was always about a thousand times cooler and more plugged-in to what was happening, or had happened, in music than most people realize; His musical tastes were wildly eclectic, adventurous, and fearless; Jazz was by no means his only field of interest - Pop, classical, opera, rock, avant-garde - He gave everything a try...)

Today, in Musical History, February 15th, 2013: 71-year-old Chubby Checker sues Hewlett-Packard and Palm for $500,000,000, for including an 99-cent app on their phones and tablets that is not only named after Checker, but also calculates the size of a man's penis based on his shoe size.

The app is removed, and the lawsuit is settled in 2014.

Way to go after the hydra.
