Surreal. Soulless. And, not in a good way.

Today, in Musical History, February 4th, 1968:

London, England: John Lennon And Paul McCartney, recording "Across The Universe", decide that the song needs falsetto vocals - Which neither of them feel confident they can do.

So, they go outside and ask a group of teenagers who were hanging around if any of them could hold a high note; Two girls, 16-year-old Lizzie Bravo, a Brazilian emigrant, and Gayleen Pease, 17-year-old native Londoner, affirm that they can, and are asked if they'd like to take a swing at it; Lizzie and Gayleen go for it.

They record the "nothing's going to change my world" chorus, but their vocals were not used on the version of "Across The Universe" that was on "Let It Be"; They do however, appear on the original mix, which was released on the "No One's Gonna Change Our World" and "Rarities" albums.

Unfortunately, both Lizzie and Gayleen have since passed on.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, unbeknownst to any of them. racist, sexual degenerate rapist and US Senator Strom Thurmond, of South Carolina, sends a secret letter to corrupt scumbag and United States Attorney General John Mitchell, suggesting the two of them illegally conspire to revoke Lennon's visa and permanently bar him from America, purely because they don't like him or his politics.
Aren't sneaky, chickenshit, chest-beating, phony patriots just wonderful ? The world really is a better place with them both dead. Their dirty little scheme eventually failed, and Lennon was granted permanent residency, although it took almost 4 years. (He would have become a naturalized citizen, but was murdered before that could happen.)

Ultra-conservative Amurica. Excuse me while I vomit into my trash basket.

A staff songwriter and occasional singer at the fledgling precursor to Motown, Tamla, their third single was Strong's "Money (That's What I Want") -

BOOM. #2 R&B, Top 30 Pop. Just like that, Strong put Tamla on the map, and provided the revenue to hatch Motown itself.
