On this day in 1942, the BBC introduces what will become the United Kingdom's longest-running radio show: "Desert Island Discs", where a celebrity or something is a guest (called a "castaway" - cute), and is asked to list 8 recordings, 1 book and 1 luxury item that they'd like to have if ever stranded on a desert isle, and the reasons for each of them; Over 3,400 episodes, and still going strong, many of them available for listening on the BBC's website.
