Mr. Hawkins, a tireless road warrior, rockabilly madman and bawdy rock & roller, wrote "Susie Q" (with his cousin, Dale); his group, the Hawks, were the most feared and respected bar band in Toronto, and included, at various times, Roy Buchanan, Mort Schuman, Grady Martin, Rebel Payne, Sonny Terry, and future members of Janis Joplin's Full Tilt Boogie Band, Crowbar, and other stompers; one time, his entire band bailed on him (Except for Levon Helm), and, unfazed, he replaced them with Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel - who, of course, eventually struck out on their own as The Band.
Hawkins pretty much just kept going, performing well into his 70's before dying at the age of 87.
