Today, in Musical History, January 2nd, 1950: Sam Phillips opens Memphis Recording Service, which he later renames Sun Studio.
While Elvis got all the attention, what frequently gets called the "first Rock n' Roll single, "Rocket 88", by Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats (Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm, under a different name) was recorded there in 1951, which really put Sam on the musical map, lending some credence to Sam's own claims that Memphis Recording Service / Sun Studios was the "birthplace of Rock and Roll".

Today, in Musical History, January 3rd, 1926: Sir George Martin b. London England.
Possibly the man who made "producing" music a term that the average Joe could understand, Martin produced all but one of the Beatles' albums, as well as dozens of others. A meticulous arranger, naturally curious about new and unusual sounds, Martin taught the Liverpool band how to use the recording studio itself as an instrument, allowing their musical imaginations and ambitions to expand accordingly.
While he is certainly most closely associated with the Beatles, Martin had a vast catalog of artists he worked with: Gerry & the Pacemakers, Cilla Black, Jeff Beck, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Kate Bush and literally dozens of others; His production of Elton John's Princess Diana tribute, "Candle In The Wind," remains the biggest-selling single in British music history.
