Cover of the Day:

"Tush", #20  Pop, 9/13/1975, ZZ Top

Cover by Austin, TX underground legends Fastball, from volume 5 of the "All ATX" covers series

Today in Musical History, September 14th:

1955: A bored and restless Little Richard, on a lunch break while in the studio with Bumps Blackwell, hauls off and rips through the original, utterly filthy version of "Tutti Frutti" -

And Blackwell, who had been unhappy with the bland, cautious material that had already been laid down, grabs a nearby songwriter, Dorothy Bostrie, to re-write the racy lyrics into acceptable radio fodder, cues the band, and hits "Record" -

And, one could make a strong argument that rock & roll is born, right then and there.

Just another of the apparently inexhaustible Mike Dillon's million-and-one bands and musical projects.

Cover of the Day:

"Get Up, Stand Up"; Never charted; Single released 9/14/73, by Bob Marley & the Wailers, on "Burnin'"

Cover by the Specials, from their 2021 album, "Protest Songs"

Huh. I always assumed Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up" made it onto the charts.

One would think so, but a song being famous, isn't a sure sign that it was a hit; Zeppelin never even released "Stairway To Heaven" as a single, but anytime somebody says "Led Zeppelin", that's the song that pops into most people's heads.

Today in Musical History, September 15th:

1957: John Coltrane records "Blue Train"

Cover of the Day:

"Situation Vacant", by the Kinks, released 9/14/1967, on "Something Else"

Chuck Prophet's version comes from a 2017 MOJO magazine, various-artists, 50th-anniversary tribute to the album

Today in Musical History, September 16th:

1966: A British magistrate calls the Rolling Stones “complete morons, who wear filthy clothes”.

Well, THAT certainly put an end to those uncouth ruffians and their hijinks.
