Cover of the Day:
"Don't Forget Me", released 8/19/74, on Harry Nilsson and John Lennon's album, "Pussycats"
Ms. Faithfull's version comes from her live album "20th Century Blues" - Although the weird little preamble about how Harry supposedly died was added to the video, I'd guess as a tribute to Nilsson's own absurdist sense of humor.
Today in Musical History, August 20th:
1982: Robert Wyatt releases "Shipbuilding", written by Clive Langer and Elvis Costello during the Falklands War, about the irony of the British ships, lost in combat, giving a boost to the shipbuilding industry back in Britain - And the British men who gave their lives in that pointless, avoidable war.
Costello himself recorded the song a year later, and released his version on "Punch The Clock".
Cover of the Day:
"Basket Case", #1 Alternative, 8/20/1994, by Green Day, of course.
Makrosoft's snarky "easy-listening" version comes from their album "Stereo Playable Also Mono", a collection of covers that I am convinced make the point that what seems culturally "revolutionary" at the time, eventually becomes just more supermarket background music that shoppers hardly even notice.
Today in Musical History, August 21st:
2015: The Foo Fighters, after having one of their Kansas City concerts picketed by the Westboro Baptist "Church", had a truck driven up in front of the protesters and drowning them out by blasting Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up".
Good on the Foo Fighters.
Cover of the Day:
"Wish I Could Shimmy (Like My Sister Kate)" (Armand Piron), released 8/21/1921, by The Original Memphis Five
JD McPherson's version comes from the third volume of music from the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire"
Today in Musical History, August 22nd:
"In my career, people in the record business have been rockin' the same old boat. They ALL crooks, - I'll say it loud and clear - especially the big ones." - John Lee Hooker, born either 1912 or 1917, either Tutwiler or Clarksdale, MS
Cover of the Day
"Do You See My Love (For You Growing)" (Johnny Bristol), #32 Pop, 8/22/70, Jr. Walker & the All Stars
the Dirtbombs, "Ultraglide In Black", 2001
