Ah, don'tcha just love unbridled capitalism?

Cover of the Day, July 27th:

"Land Of A 1,000 Dances", #77 Pop, 7/27/63, Chris Kenner

Thee Midniters, the premier Latino/Chicano rock band in Los Angeles (and a big influence on Los Lobos, to name just one), beat Cannibal & the Headhunters to covering "Land" by almost a year...

Today in Musical History, July 28th:

1969: The Moscow police report that thousands of public telephones have been vandalized by "youths", who have been cannibalizing the phones for parts to turn their acoustic guitars into electric guitars.

Mmmmmm. Funky.

Cover of the Day, July 28th:

"Guess Things Happen That Way" (Cowboy Jack Clement), #11 Pop, 7/28/58, Johnny Cash

Today in Musical History, July 29th:

1972: Infamous British dingbat Screaming Lord Sutch is arrested, after a publicity stunt for his upcoming London gigs, involving him and five nude women jumping off a bus on Downing Street, put some proper English noses out of joint.

Cover of the Day:

"LIght My Fire", # 1 Pop, July 29th, 1967, the Doors

Today in Musical History, July 30th:

1966: The Troggs unintentionally pull off a truly unique one: Their song "Wild Thing" becomes the only #1 hit single to be simultaneously released on two different, competing labels.
An unresolved dispute over the song's US distribution results in both Fontana and Atco releasing their own pressings - Exact same song, exact same polyvinyl chloride, just different pieces of paper glued to each side.

Interesting.
