"There are no natural barriers. It's all music. It's either hip, or it ain't."

Cover of the Day, July 10th:

"Bang A Gong (Get It On)", # 1 UK, 7/10/71, T. Rex

Today in Musical History, July 11th:

1951: After a few years of bouncing from station to station, playing hot jazz, pop and frequently butting heads with management, Alan Freed begins playing R&B records on "Moondog's House Party" a midnight show on WJW 850 AM, Cleveland, OH, songs that (at first) were hand-picked by record store owner Leo Mintz. Interesting things begin to happen.

Love it.

Cover of the Day, July 11th:

7/11/1969: David Bowie releases "Space Oddity" nine days before Apollo 11 lands on the moon; It started out slowly, but eventually made it to No, 5 on the British charts. It took another three years for it to take off in America, and then was re-released in England - Where it went to No. 1, 11/8/75

(This cover is by Wilco, recorded January 8th, 2016 - Bowie's 69th birthday)

Today in Musical History, July 12th:

1934: Harvey Lavan "Van" Cliburn, piano prodigy, b. Shreveport, LA

Here he is, shocking the world by winning the first International Tchaikovsky competition - an AMERICAN, 23 years old, in 1958 MOSCOW at the height of the Cold War, taking home the "Best in Show" with his performance of one of Russia's most beloved musical sons' masterpieces.

Great video. I believe I saw Van Cliburn's first Carnegie Hall broadcast about 5 weeks after he'd played in Moscow.  It was a big deal because he'd won the Tchaikovsky competition. I was 6 and, other than enjoying the music, I remember noting how lo-o-o-o-ng and slender his fingers were. Kinda creepy to me then.
