I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

Rather than wishing for change, you first must be prepared to change. ~ Catherine Pulsifer

"And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been." -- RAINER MARIA RILKE

"The New Year means very little if you’re still in love with your comfort zone. Challenge yourself not to live the same year 85 times & call it a life. Growth begins today, at the end of your comfort zone. Dream. Attempt. Explore. This moment is the beginning of anything you want."  ~  Marc and Angel Chernoff

"In order to move forward we need to open to not-knowing, and allow it to be there as part of our reality."  ~  Zen Moments

"We don't live in the world of reality, we live in the world of how we perceive reality". ~ Bryan Singer

"in some cultures, doctors don’t ask, “When did you start to feel depressed?” but, “When did you stop dancing?"  ~  Danny Penman

"To discover an awakened heart within ourselves, it is crucial not to idealize or romanticize compassion. Our compassion simply grows out of our willingness to meet pain rather than to flee from it." - Christina Feldman

"Science and art have in common intense seeing, the wide-eyed observing that generates empirical information."

-- Edward R. Tufte

"Opinion is really the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability, no understanding. The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another’s world." ~Bill Bullard

And yet it is impossible to function efficiently in our everyday lives without our opinions. We can't know everything exactly at all times. The trick is to NOT cling dogmatically to our opinions and to actively be open to opportunities to bring them into better alignment with our experiences.

“When fear arises, it means that we are at some edge of what we’re willing to be with, what we’re willing to accept. Right there is precisely the most interesting place of practice … that is the place to work, to look, to explore. That is the place to open.” - Joseph Goldstein
