TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

"The essence of faith is fewness of words and abundance of deeds." — Bahá´u´lláh,

founder of the Baháʼí Faith

"One thing: you have to walk, and create the way by your walking; you will not find a ready-made path."  ~  Osho

"Now is the time to act just as if your head was on fire...Work on your behavior as if you were a fish in a stream that was drying out."  ~  Dogen (Brad Warner translation)

Well, perhaps a bit intense for this forum but Dogen, a master if metaphor, was only reminding his audience not to be half-assed about anything. If its worth any effort, its worth your full effort. And that's what it takes to forge a path into the uncertainty of the future. This is Mindfulness in action. It's  not a philosophy to contemplate; its a prescription for action.

"Positivity is a choice. The happiness of your life greatly depends on the quality of your thoughts. And remember, being positive doesn't mean ignoring the negativity around you, it means overcoming the negativity within you." ~ Marc and Angel Chernoff

"Anxiety can try and force us into relentless doing when often the answer is to just to allow the anxiety to be. Really feel it and allow it to move through us."  ~
Everyday Mindfulness

"We compare our time on this earth to that of a candle, growing shorter with each day. But through zen we come to identify ourselves as not the candle, but the flame." ~ Philip Toshio Sudo

"Entrenched in the tunnel vision of our personal concerns, what we ignore is our kinship with others." ~ Pema Chodron

When I'm an old lady, I'll live with each kid,
And bring so much happiness just as they did.
I want to pay back all the joy they've provided.
Returning each deed! Oh, they'll be so excited!
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
I'll write on the walls with reds, whites and blues,
And I'll bounce on the furniture wearing my shoes.
I'll drink from the carton and then leave it out.
I'll stuff all the toilets and oh, how they'll shout!
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
When they're on the phone and just out of reach,
I'll get into things like sugar and bleach.
Oh, they'll snap their fingers and then shake their head,
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
When they cook dinner and call me to eat,
I'll not eat my green beans or salad or meat,
I'll gag on my okra, spill milk on the table,
And when they get angry I'll run if I'm able!
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
I'll sit close to the TV, through channels I'll click,
I'll cross both eyes just to see if they stick.
I'll take off my socks and throw one away,
And play in the mud 'til the end of the day!
When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.
And later in bed, I'll lay back and sigh,
I'll thank God in prayer and then close my eyes.
My kids will look down with a smile slowly creeping,
And say with a groan, "She's so sweet when she's sleeping!"

"It is wonderful how much time good people spend fighting the devil. If they would only expend the same amount of energy loving their fellow men, the devil would die in his own tracks of ennui." —Helen Keller

"When you feel an urge, know that you don’t have to fight it. You don’t have to follow it either. Just allow it to be, and you might find that it passes soon enough." #mindfulness

"Even [in] the darkest times, there are surprising glimmers of light that one can use to ignite imagination and ease the overwhelming grief. The momentary glimmers are ... reminders that there is something other than the pain." - Meredith Parfet
