My son called today with his daughter and asked me what musical instrument I played in high school and with the VFW band.  She's thinking about the recorder.  He wants her to play a real instrument and they're up to a flute.  I explained the differences between a trumpet and a flute and now she's confused what she wants to play.  What would you tell her?

If a child is 'forced' to play an instrument they are not interested in, they lose the enthusiasm in learning to play. They should be allowed to play what interests them. That way they may go on and learn other instruments.  A very small percentage go on to play an instrument after they leave school unless it is a guitar, piano, or drums.

I don't know if they still utilize the recorder much in modern band music, but I have always considered it a legitimate  instrument, beyond its use in elementary school flutaphone bands. Check out some Vivaldi recorder concertos. I mean if she's drawn to that, it might be her passion.

I guess I would let her or help her look them up on the computer.  That explanation with pics should be great.

I wouldn't know what to tell her about wind and brass instruments.
