TBD on Ning

Recently read a really different book MY LOVELY WIFE.  If you enjoy stories about serial murders you’ll be startled at this story. Can’t remember the author but please Goggle it.

Today picked up a right off the press book  THE WIVES  by Tarryn Fisher. The cover reads “How far would you go to find the truth about your husband. You’ll have whiplash until the very end.  THE WIVES will leave the most sure-footed reader uneasy until the last word is read.”

I've been off Bookoholics for awhile.  Don't get notifications in my email like I used to and then time sails past...  Anyway a few favorites so far this year are Where the Crawdads Sing, This Tender Land, and Nothing More Dangerous by Allen Eskens.   I have just started Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin so the jury is still out on that one but so far I like it, very atmospheric.

Good hearing from you, Carci!  Last night I finished DEAR EDWARD by Ann Neapolitan.  Very sad story about a passenger plane crash with one survivor but so beautifully written. I did lay the book aside for a day but so glad I went back to finish it. This book contains a memorable story!

Early this morning, i.e. 3:45am, I finished CROOKED RIVER authored by Preston&Child. The first couple chapters were slow for me but then”Whew”, the story took off and whipped through shocking tweet/turns leading to a powerful adversary with a sadistic agenda. This is a Pendergast novel at it’s best!  Enjoy!

rapa, i loved Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin.  Then had a few just OK books not worth recommending.

I just started The Escape Room by Megan Goldin.  Two friends read it and both said they couldn't put it down so I'm expecting to enjoy it.

Our library is closing down tomorrow until this virus runs itself out... hopefully that will happen.  Now I'll have to start reading the scores of books on my bookshelves that I've always said I was saving for when the Library burns down... thankfully that hasn't happened.

When at the library on Tuesday, I was told they would be closing at the end of the day and would not reopen until April 1. However, I am sure it will be later than that, perhaps much later. So before going home, I checked out four books, hoping that would cover me for a while, at least. Since my last post, among others, I have read A Minute to Midnight by David Baldacci, Dead Mans Mistress by David Houseright and The Night Fire by Michael Connelly. All highly recommended. I am now reading an excellent book by Allen Eskens, titled Nothing More Dangerous. I can not recommend it highly enough.

These are certainly trying times. Please! Everyone in Bookoholics: Stay safe.

I wanted to say a little more about Nothing More Dangerous. It is somewhat of a difficult read--at least for me. (I am about half way through.) It is not "difficult" in the way Finnegans Wake is difficult, but because of the subject matter. It deals with racism and hate. Plus I have become so invested in the wonderful main character, a 15 year old boy named Boady Sanden, that , as I read, I fear something terribly bad is going to happen to him or to his new friend, Thomas, a black kid of the same age. I'll say no more, but please read it.

loruach, I read it shortly after it came out... another great novel by one of my favorite authors, Allen Eskens.  His first book was incredible... The Life We Bury... I still remember it after 5 years (& 100's of books)

Here is a link to his Fantastic Fiction page:  https://www.fantasticfiction.com/e/allen-eskens/

I've loved each one of his books. If you haven't read the others you have a treat in store. :)

I believe I have read all his novels, Carci. And I completely agree with you. Thanks so much for the link.

Have saved the link, Carci.  Thanks for posting it. Did enjoy THE LIFE WE BURY .  Wish the library was open so I could grab more of Eskens books right now! Currently reading several books by Kendra Elliot that I checked out day before library closed. She writes good stories with lots of twists. I do have about 70 books downloaded on Kindle app so may have to dive into them.

Thanks RAPA for nagging me to breeze by for a word or 2.

Our Libraries are closed in my County along with many others in Ohio.  Unfortunately, I have no stashed items!  Have 3 or 4 awaiting pick up and another 10 in the cue. Overtime I’ve bought books and audiobooks at books sales in case of being snowed in.  Almost all audiobooks have been listened to at least once.  I’ll start reading the books as soon as I can step away from constant reporting of the Coronavirus on Fox.

Have no recommendations of titles at this time.  Did finally listen to Where the Crawdads Sing and enjoyed.

My daughter sent me a link to an Instant eCard for access to digital books.  Our Library does have Hoopla and one other link for digital books.  Of course I never took the time to get the lessons to receive such action???  DUH!

I will be researching soonly. Miss you all!

My library is closing after tomorrow too but online borrowing is still available.  I also have plenty of books on my Kindle and Nook and I'm sure my kids would be glad for me to read and then donate unread books that I already have!

I read "My Lovely Wife" too - what a book!  Right now I'm reading "The Lost Family:  How DNA is Upending Who we are".  It's about DNA testing like 23 And Me and Ancestry.com.  I'm not quite halfway into it; there are actual stories of people who find previously-unknown relatives and the sometimes-unintended consequences of what is found out.  Very thought-provoking!

Thank you, Loruach and Carci - when my library system re-opens I will definitely be reading Allen Eskens' books!

I made one last trip (for now) to my library before they closed at 5:00 today and took out 6 more books.  Our librarian was also giving away all the books from the "Used Books for Sale" rack so I got 4 of those too.  She said today that it is really painful to know that libraries for the first time will not be available for people who need them.  (Ours was unavailable after our fire but we still had access to the rest of the library system).  I agree!
