I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

There should be separately defined terms for the hollow sort of pleasure that we tend to strive for, even when it is never really fulfilling or lasting and the sense of contentment that simply descends on us once we simply 'let go.'

Well I find that Eckhart Tolle has specifically defined words for this situation.

"Is there a difference between happiness and inner peace? Yes. Happiness depends on conditions being perceived as positive, inner peace doesn't."

I will try to use these terms as defined above.

Searching for Enlightenment (or happiness or any attachment), is like 'Riding an ox in search of an ox."   -  Zen metaphor

"Don't be controlled by your thoughts. They are a small part of you, and they are random and often non-sensical."  ~  Everyday Mindfulness

"Sunny days are sunny days, rainy days are rainy days, windy days are windy days - and each is perfectly so."  ~  William Scott Wilson

Had this author been corresponding from my neighborhood in northern Ohio, he might have added - snowy days are snowy days - but maybe that would belabor the point.

"If we argue, I say, 'Thank you,' because owing to the courtesy of your taking a different point of view, I understand what I mean."  ~  Alan Watts

"Do not be afraid of your difficulty. Turn toward it. Learn to lean into the wind."  ~  Jack Kornfield

Mindfulness stresses direct attention to all emotions, both pleasant and not.

"Our stress response system evolved to protect us from danger. However, it can not distinguish between a saber-toothed tiger in the wild and a harsh email."  ~  Mindful Online

"Clouds remind us that nothing is permanent, train yourself to look at everything the way you look at clouds."  ~  Timber Hawkeye

"Its not enough to pray for peace of mind, we have to examine what's disturbing us and eliminate it. In the same way, just wishing to be well won't cure physical illness; you have to adopt the preventative measures and take the prescribed medicine."  ~  Dalai Lama
