I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

This one speaks to me today. It points to the fact that much of my frustration and sense of uselessness derives from my inability to 'fix' everything for all the people in my life. I know that they will ultimately have to solve their own problems, but I still feel inadequate when I can't provide the definitive help or advice to put them on the right track. I need some self-compassion first before I can try to be useful to anyone else. But that can seem so selfish.

"To let go does not mean to get rid of. To let go means to let be. When we let be with compassion, things come and go on their own."  ~  Jack Kornfield

"Feeling the need to be busy all the time is a trauma response and a fear-based distraction from what you'd be forced to acknowledge if you slow down."  Sarah Sarkis

"I don't know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day."

The Summer Day,  ~  Mary Oliver

"It's not about getting from here to there, it's about getting from here to here."  ~  Lama Surya Das

"Where ever you go, there you are.."

It's always now.

"Become aware of what self you are imagining you to be."  ~  Byron Katie

"Welcome to the movie of who you think you are. Pass the popcorn."  ~  Byron Katie

"Do only one thing at a time. When you walk, just enjoy walking. When you listen, really listen. You will become happier and more centered."  ~  Haemin Sunim

Multitasking is not only a way of doing more things poorly but a sure path to stress and anxiety. Prioritize, if something is left undone, let it go.

"A thought is harmless unless you believe it. It's not our thoughts, but our attachment to our thoughts, that causes suffering."  ~  Byron Katie

Just because you can think a thought doesn't mean you have to believe it. But if you're not paying attention, your ego might just latch on to that thought for no better reason than the pride of having thought it.
