TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

"We see thoughts for what they are - the passionate attachment to unreal and  non-substantial things."  ~  Trailer Rinpoche

"Balance your productivity with nurturing downtime. Ambition becomes unhealthy if we can't slow down and smell the roses."  ~   Daily Zen

Still too many technical problems with this site, will come back later.

"Reality is that moment of vision before the intellectualization takes place. There is no other way."  ~  Robert M. Pirsig

"Mindfulness is not about accessing bliss - it's about tamping down the temptation to opt out of the unpleasant and only seek the pleasant."  ~  MindfulnessOnline

"Would it be possible to subject to life instead of objecting to it"  ~  Alan Watts

Being mindful helps me illuminate unconscious habits. I become aware of all those little things I do without thinking. They are not bad or useless but being aware of them allows me to pick and choose among them.

Still can't get the edit feature to work. I meant to say "they are not ALL bad or useless" but somehow the all was omitted.

"Those who reject change are the architects of decay. The only human institution which rejects change is the cemetery."  ~  Harold Wilson

"We can not be present, and run our story-line at the same time.  ~  Pema Chodron

Being present meaning full attention to this moment, in the here and now.

"Mindfulness helps us get better at seeing the difference between what's happening and the stories we tell ourselves...that get in the way of direct experience. Often such stories treat a fleeting state of mind as if it were our entire and permanent self."  ~  Sharon Salzberg

Sharon Salzberg (quoted above) is one of my go-to inspirations. Apparently she has just recently been hospitalized for a serious health problem. Wishing her well.

Just checking in and trying to catch up with all of the thoughts shared since the last time I was here.  So much has been shared that I have a little regret that I have stayed away so long.  I will just post replies as I move through the wealth and maybe bring myself up to date while enjoying the journey.  At this point I want to chime in on the surprising value that comes with unpleasant experiences.  They are the times when I learn the most about myself and what I am capable of.
