I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

It's not about minimizing emotions, or even controlling them. It's about utilizing emotions to affect positive results in our life and then letting them go without rumination.

"Make sure you weave your parachute every day, rather than leave it to the time you have to jump out of the plane."  ~  Jon Kabat-Zinn

Resistance to a daily practice sneaks up on me. Some days I just want to say " Not today, take a day off."  But I never know when the plane that is my life will encounter excessive turbulence.

"Labeling emotions as good or bad is a dangerous game. Feel them freely; investigate them."  ~  #mindfulness

"Forcing yourself to be constantly positive is draining...and unhelpful."  ~  #mindfulness

"We would worry less about what others think of us if we realized how seldom they do."  ~  Ethel Barrell

"What me worry?"  ~  Alfred E. Neuman

"I love the Aggie spirit, I like the academic excellence of the place, and I love every single day that I spend on the A&M campus. I'm proud to be part of this school, and I'm proud to be an Aggie." – President George H.W. Bush

I was not aware he was an aggie. Cool.

Texas A&M University adopted him after he moved to Texas.

Ok, that makes sense.

(Responding both to Aggie and PT Brewer.)

What do you see in this graphic?

Let's say that the black dot represents all that is bad while the white represents all that is good.  The mind is naturally drawn to the bad; you have to teach it to be otherwise. #mindfulness
