I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

Still struggle with this one. Too tempting to evade the negatives and embrace the positives. But this leads to all the miseries inherent to attachments and aversions. Need to intercept these thoughts in the fraction of a second before they reach the part of the brain that feels the necessity to pass judgement on everything.

Reminds me of the old Native American story:

Once upon a time, there was a Cherokee grandfather, who told his grandson, “Grandson, there are two wolves inside of me. One wolf is white, good and altruistic, generous and kind, and the other wolf is black, mean and greedy, violent and angry. The two wolves are in a constant fight within me.” The grandson, with wide eyes, says, “But which one will win, grandpa?” And the grandfather says, “The one which I feed.”

That is so good. I am reminded of that graceful phrase in that Lincoln speech, appealing to "the better angels of our nature." I picture an angel on one shoulder, and the devil on the other, taking turns whispering into your ear.

earth, peace cannot escape you."

Not then, but now.

Not there, but here.

Not that, but this.

Is there a more effective way to alienate somebody than projecting your attachments and aversions on them? My intention for today will be to soften my expectations and let my people just be who they need to be.

Well, so much for that plan.
