Must confess to a happening last week. Having read an easy reading best seller novel by Susan Mallery A MILLION a LITTLE THINGS, I reserved another book by her from library SUMMER NIGHTS. Picked it up on way to gym where I started reading it while on my machine. A friend walked by and I commented that this book is starting to read like a Harlequin. As it was getting juicier and juicier I checked the publisher and Yep, it was a Harlequin! Have no doubt that once you've read one you've read them all, although the story line wasn't bad.
Reflected on -P.J. O'Rourke's- comment "Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it!". As I'll be 82 in Nov. am sure that was my first and last Harlequin!

Can't believe it is May already. The year is really moving fast. I really like that quote by P. J O'Rourke. I hope everyone here is well and enjoying life. I am trying but allergies have hit me hard this year and so I have been down a bit. But my Granddaughter, who is 12, was reading a book one day when I was watching her and her brothers. She would read parts of it to me and we would laugh. I love to know what she is into so I got the book from the Library and I am so enjoying it. The title is "Scarlet and Ivy, The Lost Twin" by Sophie Cleverly . I am really enjoying it. I know it is a children's book but it is full of mystery and is very well written.
But the reason I came to TEE BEE DEE today is that I found a list of bookstores by state that I thought you all might enjoy taking a look at. The Best Bookstores In All 50 States.

I, myself, don't care for Harlequin........boy meets girl, boy and girl hate each other.......then they fall madly in love....sometimes a bit of a story but most of the time just angst.

A Harlequin! Gasp! Rapa, I am shocked!
Actually, I expect that some of my reading isn't many steps above a Harlequin.
Anyway, over the last couple weeks I finished a couple very good books: Fatal by John Lescroart and The Girl Next Door by Brad Parks. I especially liked Fatal, a stand alone by Lescroart, who is one of my favorite writers, although this is not one of his Dismas Hardy novels.
Now I am reading The Wrong Side of Goodby by Michael Connelly and enjoying it immensely. Yesterday, I was planning to walk over to the library but couldn't put the book down. Needless to say, I highly recommend it to any and all. I never did make it to the library.

I am reading HOMO DEUS...A Brief History of Tomorrow by Yuval Noah Harari...PHD Univ of Oxford, works for Dept of History Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Not to play "Can You top this?" But he is funny and engaging...saw that Bill Gates and Obama read and thought..."Why not?" Changing so many things I thought were non-negotiable!
For fun and frolic RE-listening to A 2001 book by Dean Koontz. ONE DOOR AWAY FROM HEAVEN. Let's just say, I thought this was my favorite book in all my life but guess crossing to age 74 about a week ago means my brain waves have evolved?
Struggled through a Faye Kellerman BONE BOX. Would try some of her others. Can't say it was gripping but I'll give her another chance.
Today was a ruckus in the Political arena so needless to say I've been majorly distracted!!! As is much of the US population especially at our age? -

I stumbled upon a trilogy that I am really enjoying. I guess the books are old and probably have been read by many of you, but just in case, I would recommend
A beautiful story that starts in the year 900......from England to Persia and back.......then onto the United States covering one family of physicians......I am not done with the last one yet, but so far I have been impressed. To me, it is the kind of book you think about during the day and wonder how the characters are doing. -

Geez....I had to sign in again for the first time in years!!!!
Am desperate for a good read. Was not thrilled with Paula Hawkins's INTO THE WATER, Elizabeth Strout's ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, or the latest Mary Higgins Clark book. Found GINNY MOON by Benjamin Ludwig tedious reading but good all over story. Today I took the latest READER'S DIGEST to the gym! Have several books on reserve and hope one will be a ringer!!!
Have been depressed since the Mama feral cat and three kittens that I watched from bedroom window have moved on! Papa cat came one day and next day they all moved on. My kids are allergic to cats and can't afford the vet fees for a dog nor the strength to walk it. I did visit the Wild Bird store today and played with their two house cats. Need a good book!!! Will take some suggestions from Carolyn and Lorauch and any others any of you will suggest.
Am just having a dry spell and sure I'll soon find another book that I won't want to put down!
Suggestions, please! I only read at night or at gym! -

I am so glad to hear others have dry spells. I always feel guilty when I start a book that sounds good and then don't care for it!

Oh my I thought I was the only one. Ha ha I always feel as if I have to keep reading because I might miss something and I have met these people (who are in the book) and have to keep reading for their sake. It is very hard to put down a book I have started but I do it sometimes.

Whew! I finally found a book that's holding my attention! It's SINCE WE FELL by Dennis Lehane.
The prologue begins:
"On a Tuesday in May, in her thirty-fifth year, Rachel shot her husband dead. He stumbled backward with an odd look of confirmation on his face, as if some part of him had always known she'd do it.
He looked surprised too. She assumed she did as well.
Her mother wouldn't have been surprised." -

I have that one on hold, rapa, and looking forwarding to reading it. I read some good ones a few years ago by Lehane and am hoping to renew my acquaintance with him.
