TBD on Ning

I ran out of library books about a week ago and decided to try a Kindle book which Amazon offered as a Prime read this month...  Winter Men, and I'm enjoying it... however...

I've found that between my computer & iPad I am spending a lot of time in front of the blue screen and have recently been reading that this can be detrimental to your eyesight and disruptive to your REM sleep if you read an e-book instead of a paper book at bedtime.

I've also noticed that my eyes are getting very tired and achy by evening and I'm wondering if it is from the increased blue screen time.

Have any of you e-book readers noticed more of a strain on your eyes when you read a book on an e-device as opposed to a paper book?

I only do Kindle at the gym as I much prefer paper books. Am having some visual problems when reading but assume it's due to recent adjustment in blood pressure medication.

My days of juggling and struggling with full size books are over.  I just can get comfortable while laying in bed reading, morning or night.  But I never read on anything else but white screens.  I have been tempted to try other colors as both my Kindle Fire and new iphone offers a variety of them.   But I just am not comfortable. I can tell you as I have aged my sight gets pretty blurry at night and I have to switch to a bigger screen, quit reading, or switch to listening.  My best time is early in the morning. 

I use the "paperwhite" Kindle. It's not back lit and reads like real paper, if it's a dim environment, then you have to have a light. It is also the cheapest @ $79.99, but you can catch on sell for $59.99 during the year. I have a Kindle fire but I don't use it for books because of the back light.

I have had my NOOk I think for about 6 or 7 years, I read every afternoon and often when I go to bed, really like it as I don't have to get back up and turn thelights out. Have noticed nothing different inmy eyes, and when i get them tested there is very little difference from the last year.

Thanx for all your suggestions...  I have picked up several new books from the library and am now splitting my time between the e-reader and the hand library book.  I think I was just doing too much on my iPad, actually wore the battery down one day...  lol

I liked your suggestion, Slopok, about the Kindle, since mine is not back lit.  I can pull up that book on there if the screen lights begin to bother me again.

Carci   I like to switch back and forth - I can get some books on the computer from the library, I use my Kindle for others and have a whole stack of books in the bedroom and garage to choose from.  I guess the best thing is to switch around- I also like to sometimes read large print books when I am tired - easier on the eyes.  I am in that stage of life where I like taking it easy.  LOl.  Have not had eye strain on the computer or kindle - so whatever works for you is the best.

I have had my NOOK since the color came out= read on my exercise bike and before I go to bed. Read 120 books last year, have not noticed any strain to my eyes, and just had an eye test after 2years, and dr. said very little change in my eye.
