I go through my daily Kindle books deals and see if there is a bargain. Today, I spotted one that will finally get me to read a classic Sci-Fi, that has been on my shelf for years and years. The physical presence of "Cryptonomicron" by Neil Stephenson has kept me from picking up the volume due to it's sheer size that comes in at about 1200 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Cryptonomicon-Neal-Stephenson-ebook/dp/B000FC... But on a Kindle, this problem is eliminated for just a couple of bucks. How many books with small print or sheer size do you avoid reading? I have numerous. I thought I would break my wrist trying to get through "Battlefield Earth."

I just bought a paperback novel, and I wish I had bought if on my nook. I thought it would make a nice collectible, but the font is so microscopic that it gives me a headache. One of the nice things about ebooks is being able to adjust the print size.
I have been looking for a specific book for 50 years "The Moon of Much Gladness" by Ernest Bramah and finally found an affordable copy on Kindle it will be my birthday present for myself.
I love the Kindle - just got it last year and am filling it up with books to be read. Sure helped during the our severe cold this winter - curling up with a good book to read makes winter better. I just finished a book by Alafair Burke- anyone else read her? I enjoyed her book and will read more of hers - I have loved her fathers books and have read most of them.
Initially I was just downloading cheap and free books but find that if I am selective I can get top selling books and books that I have wanted to read for a long time at good prices. I seldom pay over $3.99 for any book. The best time is around Christmas when special prices go on some of the top selling titles. But if you subscribe to Book Gorilla and other services that find the specials for you, there are generally titles that are inexpensive or nearly free. The other trick is to go to the Kindle store and sort by price and popularity. The top selling cheap books are generally the best reads. I just read "Maude" for 99cent that is now $1.59. It was a great story and well written.
Thanks Mandy - I do both - I load some of the cheap ones that some here have recommended or top sellers too. I like some history books - especially American history of the west and the Civil War - so have some of those lined up. I also just sometimes pick a book that sounds good from the description- have not been too disappointed even from authors I never heard of. Have a long list of to read now - probably will outlast me. LOL. I do look at book gorilla and a couple of others for ideas too.
I have a kindle and have followed the same pattern
First I got the cheap/free books but soon came to realize that these were a waste of time and energy. I subscribe to a couple of services and eventually I started to acquire high quality books at reasonable prices, I also got Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon for $2 even though I had a thick hard copy of the book, those who liked "The Guessing Game" may enjoy this, he mixes real characters with fictional facts, he did the same with Newton in his book Quicksilver
Every once in a while I come across an obscure author offering a kindle book which I end up enjoying and reading the rest of their work, here are some that cone to mind
Toby Neal http://www.amazon.com/Toby-Neal/e/B006NR5PW2/
Giacomo Giammatteo http://www.amazon.com/Giacomo-Giammatteo/e/B007U6CUFK/

It is the device to take when you go on vacation
Sometime I discover good but nearly forgotten authors such as
Stanislav Lem http://www.amazon.com/Futurological-Congress-Memoirs-Ijon-Tichy-ebo...
Octavia Butler http://www.amazon.com/Octavia-E.-Butler/e/B000AQ1SQE/
Right now I am reading and enjoying the book Quantum Enigma that was suggested by slopok
One important aspect is that you can run a Kindle app on other devices such as laptop or smartphone and continue reading the book you bought and it keeps track of where you last stopped (and any bookmarks)
You can put your music on it, or if you have Amazon Prime, watch movies and play games, here is a fun puzzle game

Sometimes I get some reasonably priced audiobooks, that I listen to throughout the house when I am doing chores such as washing dishes
Forgot to mention that I no longer use the suggestion services, I have now ordered some 500 books from Amazon and they now know me well (too well in fact) including my proclivity for cheap books and the kind of stuff I like to read. So now I go to the personal account page of and find many suggestion, along my taste (including some welcome deviations from the "usual")
Here some such suggestions

No boredom when you have a kindle
If you like classical music, there is a trove of Amazon collection for pittance for example:

My husband got a free Kindle last year and I have put some books on it. I don't like the free ones unless they are established Authors. I tried a few and just didn't like the dialog. I had a hard time adjusting to the books on the screen instead of the page but now I like it.
I have the NOOK, and read lots of free books, it introduces me to new authors. I watch the specials everyday, and often find a book I need for my two bookclubs, very cheap for one day only. I read lots in the winter as I am almost housebound when the weather is bad. I subscribe to Bookbub.com and Earlybirds.com
I just finished a book on my Kindle - my prime selection. It is by an Irish writer Christina McKenna. The Misrembered Man is the title- it is her first novel. I will read her next. I started and could hardly wait to finish it. She does a very good job of describing her characters and the hardships of their lives. I have not read such a good book in a while. Recommend it.
Thanks, I get to pick a new Prime book next week. I look forward to these monthly choices.
