I'm reading Small Blessings by Martha Woodroof. What a change of pace from the recent thrillers! It started very slow and I almost put it down but after about 100 pages it began to grow on me and now I am enjoying a small town cozy with lots of interesting characters.
We had several inches of snow overnight and had put out fresh birdseed and suet yesterday so it's a continental breakfast with the squirrels outside my kitchen window this morning... 'small blessings' of my own... :)
One of my book clubs is going to try and go see movies that started out as books. Today 6 of us went to see Still Alice, very good and they followed the book pretty good.
I really liked the book and am looking forward to the movie.
So I have finished the J.P. Beaumont series by J. A, Jance! Next up is the Joanna Brady series, but I got diverted by Robert Dugoni's David Sloane series - 2 more to go. Has anybody else read his books? And what about Joyce Carol Oates? Has anyone read her books? She's a local author and I had tried several without being able to get into them. I just finished "Carthage", about the disappearance of a young girl and the suspect in the disappearance - her sister's former fiance, an Iraq War veteran with serious injuries and PTSD - I found her writing a little "odd" but the story line had surprises for sure.
Change of pace for me as well. Just finished Jonathan Tropper's One Last Thing Before I Go. It is the story of Drew Silver, everyone calls him Silver, even his parents. His life is pretty wasted until he learns he needs heart surgery to save his life, but instead of surgery, he opts to learn to become a better man. I know, another dysfunctional human being, but the book is full of humor and hope. I might even try reading some of his earlier novels.
I also finished The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. This is a novella for my F2F book club, and since it is barely 100 pages long, I finished it in one day. Fanciful tale about the Queen of England discovering the joys of reading in her golden years. Looking forward to our discussion.
Next read is Frog Music by the talented Emma Donoghue. Remember her?? She wrote Room. This book is set in 1876 San Francisco and the main character is (how do I say this delicately???) a dancer/lady of the night. Just started the book, but it has captured my attention.

I picked up 2 Marcia Muller books at our library book sale, and after finishing both, decided to try to read all the "Sharon McCone" books of hers. Also reading Tale of Two Cities for an OLLI class I am taking--quite a difference in the literature this week! Has anyone else taken any OLLI classes? (O. Lifelong Learning Institute) for the over 50"s set. I have really been enjoying them, and the literature related classes are stimulating. I have been so busy with classes and volunteering, I haven't stopped by to this site for awhile. I will try to do better from now on.
I have read all the J,P. Beaumont series, really liked them did not get into the Joanna Brady ones thou.
Here we have Active Minds, lectures on all kinds of subjects, history, current events, politics, entertainment.Very interesting and they always start out by saying no home work, no test, and you don't have to raise your hand to go to the bathroom. have been going to them for abut 9 years.
I also take those classes, but here in CA we call them Osher classes. We haven't had many literature classes, but a wide variety of others. This morning I'm off to attend a class titled :The Gods Must Be Crazy". Great class, but too hard to describe in this space! I recommend checking at your local colleges to see what they are offering.
