I think that one of our key members Rapa has had a lot on her hands lately, she has the knack of getting discussions going.

Please send you good thoughts to her and her hubby.

I have been snowed at work lately but had time to reread an old favorite: Dune by Frank Herbert. Realized I had missed many nuances when I read it first

He's one of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy authors. I love the way he builds an entire universe around his stories.

A well constructed story.

I missed that the "spice melange that allows space travel" is a euphemism for oil.

It was published in 1965 but has sharp geo-policitcal insights (including an emperor called Shaddam) as well as ecological and spiritual aspects that were not at all known during the time this was written

I'm not getting notifications for this group either, Joanne.  In fact, I'm only getting notifications for about half my groups; I've made sure that I have "email me when new activity in any of my groups" checked in my global teebeedee settings and I've got "follow COMMENTS" for each group checked (apparently that's also gotta be done for each group); still only getting about half the notifications though.  (You'd think if there were a problem with my email I wouldn't be getting any notifs at all instead of half, but who knows.)

I'm hooked on Amazon Fire TV.  After years and years of constant chain reading, I finally took a bit of a hiatus to watch some of the series I am getting on demand from the new Amazon TV I recently installed.  Initially, I consumed five seasons and over 110 episodes of "The Good Wife;"  did three seasons of "Suits," and now am finishing up "Damages," as I watch the 60th and final episode.  I keep promising myself to get back to my reading schedule, but the allure of the HD screen and a number of great legal thrillers  keep my eyes fixed.

I'm going on a three day getaway to Lake Michigan tomorrow morning, so I may throw the Kindle in the car and get back to reading.

Hubby is now into his fifth hospitalization since May 5th. Currently in a rehab hospital but only making slow progress. I spend most of each day here as he needs help with feeding, etc. He's in isolation due to C-DIFF developed post extensive antibiotic treatment for a ruptured diverticulum. At night before sleep I've been reading Jeffery Deaver's new novel THE SKIN COLLECTOR. This appears to be a sequel to his THE BONE COLLECTOR. It's good to be back with Rhyme and Sachs!
Have enjoyed seeing what the rest of you are reading. HAPPY SUMMER READING!!!!!!

Rapa, I am praying for a quicker response to your hubby's treatment.  He has really been suffering, and I know you are distraught and worn out.  Prayers are for you too.

Wonderful to hear from you Rapa.

Hope your husband recovers nicely and back home soon

Boy am I ever glad to hear from all of you.  Rapa I am sorry to hear about your hubby and I do hope he starts getting much better soon.  Glad you can get a little reading in.  Thanks everyone for your comments - have missed them.

We had one of our book clubs tues. Read "The man who loved books too much" Was an OK book, but I thought it was more about the author and the book seller than the man who stole books. Getting ready to read "Unbroken"

Today I put on reserve request THE STORIES WE TELL by Patti Callahan Henry. This novel was picked by SOUTHERN LIVING as its first "Official Beach Read of the Summer.". The story features socialites Eve and Cooper Morrison, the perfect couple with a rock solid marriage in Savannah, GA. But that all comes crashing down one night leaving Eve to search for the truth amid all the secrets and lies. Hmmmmmm...

My reading during the past three weeks or so has consisted of some pretty light Summer stuff: thrillers that don’t tax my brain cells too much, partly because I don’t know how many I have remaining. The books were Suspicion by Joseph Finder, L. A. Mental by Neil McMahon and The Keepsake by Tess Gerritsen. The Keepsake, in Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles series, was the best of the lot and the others just so so at best.

I’m now reading Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler. It’s basically the story of four men who grew up since childhood in a small (well, tiny) Wisconsin town. Now adults, it mostly focuses on their relationships and the relationships of their wives, or in one case, girlfriend. It is well written and received some modest critical praise, but I was expecting or hoping for more, probably because the fictional small town is located in the same general area where I was born and raised.  But I am only about a third of the way through the book and maybe it will grow on me.
