TBD

TBD on Ning

A couple of weeks ago, I began searching for a drafting chair on line and went to all the usual sites to start – Staples, Office Depot, Amazon, etc.

Soon after, I began to notice advertising related to drafting chairs on many of the websites that I visit regularly.

This is not new – cookie collecting (and selling) has been going on for a long time – it even occurs on TeeBeeDee. (Gasp! Is nothing sacred anymore?)

However, this time it seemed more intense, lasted for a much longer time, and transcended across a wider variety of website themes, including Ponygirls of The Pampas.

Coupling that with the recent revelations about our government practices on phone records, (Gasp! Is nothing sacred anymore?) I began to look for ways to stop this intrusion and discovered  an interesting website called Abine which specializes in online privacy.

They produce a program called “Do Not Track Me”, a free program which  blocks about 600 website cookie collectors that track your online site visits and sells them.

For more information, visit the site. There is a FAQ section that explains everything.

I downloaded it and have been testing for a couple of days. When you land at a site it instantly tells you whether you’re being tracked, blocks the trackers and provides the names of the trackers and keeps count of the total number of attempts these companies have made on your activities.

So I went back to the office supply store sites, and started searching for some specific items and waited. Nothing happened. And by that, I mean I’ve received zero advertisements for printers and inks. (or anything else)

I just logged onto Reuters and there were twelve tracking attempts – including Facebook and Twitter. (Gasp! Is nothing …?) TeeBeeDee – three companies, including Google Analytics. Amazon – five trackers, CNN (for testing purposes only) – nine companies, including Facebook again.

Now, I’m not particularly concerned if anybody knows that I’m looking for a freakin’ office chair, but I am enjoying not being hounded by advertising constantly. (sorry Marilyn)

Just thought I’d pass this on.

Cheers!

Your pal,

Mr. Helpful

Ponygirls of the Pampas?

I noticed this the first time when I was researching Medicare (yes, I'm that age!) and suddenly Medicare Supp Ads began appearing everywhere. Ka-reepy! As for advertising, my contract ended with the bank and I am now nonworking from home as opposed to working from home. Lost the TBD link, thus the silence from this end. Glad to be baaa-aaack!

Glad that was the reason for the silence. So happy to hear from you.(Been mighty quiet here lately).

"Mr. Helpful: Do you know the words to the song, "Kentucky Woman"? (Kentucky woman, she shines in her own kind of light..." etc,) I was thinking it might be a good campaign song for somebody.

Umm...sorry...I'm helpful - not smart.

Check with Smart Kid on that.

Never mind. Looked up the lyrics - something about she gets to know you/she has to own you. Not a good campaign hook.
